More to Mykonos than meets the eye

  • Written by Anna Caswell

No longer just the playground of the rich and famous, magical Mykonos has evolved into a cosmopolitan island escape, blending authentic Greek hospitality, fresh local cuisine, blissful beaches, panoramic views and a dining scene that can be as lively or laidback as you like.

From exploring the famous ruins of nearby Delos, to packing a picnic for a deserted cove, to island-hopping by private yacht or enjoying the hustle and bustle of the local harbour, there’s much more to Mykonos than the beach clubs and nightlife. Lifelong locals and founders of the Myconian Collection portfolio of nine luxury boutique Mykonos hotels, the Daktylides family, has been sharing the island’s best-kept secrets with their guests for generations.

Genuine Greek hospitality and family-run accommodation

The Daktylides family opened their first Mykonos hotel back in 1979. Today, founder George’s four sons, who grew up working in the business, continue their parents’ hands-on approach to hospitality at properties in some of the island’s most desirable locations, which include members of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Design Hotels, Relais and Châteaux, Leading Hotels of the World and Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

“Our family believes in providing hospitality from the heart and inviting guests to join us on a journey to discover the real Mykonos – in style. Our staff take the time to get to know guests, so they can suggest tailored experiences, memorable meals and more to ensure their visit to Mykonos is unforgettable and utterly unique. After all, no two guests are the same,” said Vangelis Daktylides, General Manager of Myconian Ambassador Hotel.

Exclusive Myconian experiences

From touring Mykonos’ micro-breweries to taking a helicopter flight high above the Aegean Sea, guests of Myconian Collection properties can take part in luxurious local experiences which showcase the charm and beauty of idyllic Greek island life.

Delve into ancient Greek history on the nearby island of Delos, The Garden of the Gods, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a private yacht charter. Marvel at iconic statues, ancient houses and temples, and gain an insight into early Greek life and the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis with an experienced local tour guide.

Immerse yourself in the local hipster scene by visiting a Mykonos micro-brewery – The Mykonos Brewing Company – and enjoy the unmistakeable aroma of hops as you learn about the history of Mykonos’ beers and spirits and sample perfectly brewed pints – an exclusive experience only available to guests of the Myconian Collection hotels.

Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the azure Aegean Sea in a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter tour of Mykonos and the surrounding archipelago. Also exclusive to Myconian Collection guests, this exhilarating experience will give guests an unforgettable view of the endless blues the Greek isles are famous for – in the safe and expert hands of Myconian Collection’s professional pilots.

Feast like a local

The hotels of the Myconian Collection faithfully follow a ‘paddock-to-plate’ philosophy, nurturing relationships with local producers as part of the founding family’s commitment to maintaining a strong local identity – and sharing a true taste of Mykonos with their guests.

Following in the footsteps of George Daktylides, who grew up living off the land trading cheese, sausages, cured fish and produce for imported goods, today, more than a dozen restaurants across the Myconian Collection properties serve dishes featuring lamb which has been hand-reared on family land, octopus caught specially for Myconian chefs by one of the island’s most famous fisherman, and the finest local fresh produce.

Vangelis Daktylides said: “My father George still does weekly rounds of the island with his truck loaded with farm eggs, local lamb and goat’s meat and my mother’s home-made cheeses and cakes piled high – something he’s been doing for as long as we can remember”.

Stay in local luxury

For a true taste of island life, stay like a luxury-loving local with all the comforts of home – and more – at the Myconian Villa Collection, the only property in Greece awarded Legend Collection status as a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

Blending the benefits of a luxury resort with an intimate, boutique setting akin to staying in a high-end private house, the Myconian Villa Collection is nestled into the hillside above Mykonos’ longest sandy beach, Elia, on the chilled southern side of the island.

Villas and suites enjoy panoramic ocean views from balconies, outdoor jacuzzis and infinity pools, while flexible accommodation configurations make the Myconian Villa Collection an ideal option for groups of families and friends.

Guests can take advantage of 24-hour butler service, an in-house chef, on-site boutiques, gym, restaurants and a world-class Thalasso Spa, all within 10 kilometres of lively Mykonos Town, but in an idyllic location made for experiencing indulgent island life.
