Skills training to help young Australians find a job

  • Written by Senator Cash Media Release

Young Australians will soon benefit from help to become job ready and move into the workforce.

The Turnbull Government has today announced the organisations that will be offered the opportunity to deliver Employability Skills Training, a key component of the jobactive PaTH program.

The Government has committed $188.3 million over four years to deliver pre-employment skills training, helping prepare young people aged 15-24 years to develop their employability and be more competitive in the job market.

Minister for Employment Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash said more than 70 organisations across Australia will be offered the opportunity to deliver Employability Skills Training from April.

“Employers have indicated that while they are keen to employ young Australians they are often presented with candidates who aren’t equipped with core skills that are required,” Minister Cash said.

Providers will deliver intensive training to build the essential skills employers have indicated they want, including industry-specific skills. This could include teaching young people specifically for future jobs in retail, community services, automotive, business, civil construction or telecommunication sectors.  Training will cover basic work skills plus advanced job search, interview and career development.

“This training will help young jobactive clients understand and build the attributes that employers look for when recruiting for entry level jobs,” Minister Cash said.

“This training will ensure young people are much better placed to obtain a job and enter the workforce.”

“This Government is determined that we prevent young people from being confined to a lifetime of welfare dependency. We know the best form of welfare is a job which is why we are delivering policies that will increase the prospects of young job seekers to secure sustainable employment.”

From April this year young people can also undertake a voluntary internship of four to 12 weeks to help give them a go and gain the work experience they need to secure the job.

Employers hiring a young Australian are now able to access the Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 per employee.
