What Does a Level 2 Electrician in NSW Do?

When it comes to working with electricity, safety should always be the number one priority. A level 2 ASP electrician ensures that all installations are complete and safe for use before they leave the work site so somebody doesn't get killed or seriously injured from electrocution, fire or shock.

The role of an ASP is to bring together knowledge from many different areas so you can keep the workplace as safe as possible. This includes completing tasks such as inspecting, testing and maintaining electrical systems used in buildings that range from homes and offices to schools, hotels and power stations

You should also ensure that any construction carried out complies with regulations laid down by the area's governing body, such as the National Building Code.

Your primary role is to design, install and maintain complex electrical systems used in all premises to ensure they are safe for use. This means you need to know how circuits work so that you can carry out installations safely while ensuring they are connected to the main power supply or generator correctly.

You also have to install high-powered switchgear equipment required by large industrial sites, which involves working with major current carrying systems. While working in domestic environments you might be called on to do any of the following:

  • * Install wiring for features like lighting and air conditioning
  • * Installing generators and transformers
  • * Fixing faults in existing electrical systems, for instance, faulty wiring or electric shocks
  • * Sourcing materials and equipment required for installation work
  • * Completing paperwork associated with carrying out installations in accordance with the law.

The role of an ASP offers many opportunities to develop your knowledge and build upon existing skills. You need to keep your knowledge up to date by attending training courses provided by your employer or a registered training provider because this is not only a legal requirement but also something that helps you do your job more safely and efficiently. It is possible to go on to further study in order to become a senior installer or technician who could have management responsibilities in relation to the electrical systems they are assigned.

Before an ASP can carry out work, he or she has to be supervised for at least one day so they can learn how things should be done. They cannot start working independently until they have been tested, meaning their skills have been assessed under real working conditions in accordance with national standards. This enables people who want to become installers or technicians for this type of electrical work to gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to do the type of work you will be assigned as an ASP.

Becoming an ASP typically involves completing a course at a training centre that covers the basic concepts, regulations and installations for this kind of electrical work. This can take anything from three to twelve months depending on whether you already have a background in electrical engineering that would speed up your learning process or if you need to take extra classes which can lengthen this time frame.

You should also be physically fit since it is easy to injure yourself when working with equipment such as drills, chisels and saws along with any high-powered cables needed for installations. Technical drawing is another essential skill because most technicians draw diagrams or plans for complicated wiring systems.

As an ASP, you'll be responsible for electrical systems on a given site and will need to do everything from installing power supplies and wiring up houses to checking devices before they go into production. It's also your responsibility to test all equipment and certify that it is safe and working properly using specialised computer software or hand-held testing meters. You can be assigned different jobs such as troubleshooting problems with electrical appliances or dry cell batteries which means you need some knowledge of their construction and use in order to make any repairs needed.
