Which Cyber Threats Are The Biggest Issues Right Now?

Along with great developments in the Tech industry, also comes the new wave of elaborate cyber threats. No vulnerability or flaw in the information technology system goes unnoticed by cybercriminals. Even worse, we see alarming developments in cybercrime that can affect us directly. Let's take a closer look at the most urgent threats that we need to watch out for today.

IoT Attacks

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interconnected smart devices that makes managing our daily lives much more convenient. With IoT, you can easily control multiple devices remotely, but this system comes with its own set of flaws. Introducing IoT into our lives also means opening ourselves up for new kinds of cyber threats. This system, which makes home automation possible, is still extremely vulnerable. For example, many devices come with default login information that most users are too lazy to change. This makes the devices vulnerable to attacks. Once the hacker gets into one of the devices in your IoT, it's easier for them to get access to other devices as well. The number of devices connected to the IoT will hit 75 million by 2025, which means that the risks associated with IoT will increase as well.

Ransomware Attacks

Ransomware attacks are still the most popular form of cyberattacks. The goal of a ransomware attack is usually to extort money from its victims. Ransomware attackers get the money by threatening to publish or block access to their target’s data. As cryptocurrencies become more accessible, getting away with ransomware will also become easier. This is because cryptocurrencies allow for ransom demands to be paid anonymously. For this very reason, ransomware attacks on individuals are also likely to become more frequent.

Evolving Phishing Practices

Phishing practices have been around for a very long time. While the general strategy for phishing hasn’t changed, these types of emails have become harder to detect. Cybercriminals will send out a carefully crafted message to fool people into clicking a link that can install malware. At this point, most people know better than to fall for the basic phishing plots like a Nigerian Prince offering you his money. But phishing emails have also evolved and are almost indistinguishable from real ones.

Cloud Vulnerabilities

Cloud-based solutions have become a digital essential for personal and work-related matters. As convenient as the cloud infrastructure is, it comes with a set of security challenges. Account hijacking or simple human errors can lead to catastrophic results. This is especially true for companies that use cloud-based services without any kind of insurance in place.

What Can We Do To Prevent These Cyber Threats?

Use a VPN

Most internet users overestimate the level of their privacy and safety online. Using a VPN protects your identity and keeps your personal data safe from attackers. If you do your own research online, you will find many reviews describing just how beneficial VPNs are for preventing data breaches and cybercrime. For example, one such great detailed comparison is a NordVPN review. Surely, VPNs are not the only tool you can use to increase your online safety, though. You can also look to antivirus programs for the extra layer of protection.

Invest In A Good Antivirus Program

Antiviruses are a great defense against any type of malware. An antivirus will alert you of any suspicious activity before the malware can do some damage. Luckily, there’s no shortage of good antivirus programs on the market. Also, you don’t have to break the bank to get good service since there are so many options.

Don’t Click on Suspicious Links

You can have all the sophisticated technology globally and still become a victim of cybercrime. If you are not informed about the current cyber security trends, security tools can not help you stay safe online. You might think that most cybercrime happens because of systemic flaws or vulnerabilities. In reality, the majority of cybercrime happens because of simple human errors. This is because people don't know much about cyber security or the popular online scamming techniques. Practice digital caution and don't trust anything blindly. Check the sender's information and URL before clicking on a suspicious link.
