How to Update Your Home Furnishings on a Budget

  • Written by: News Company

Tired of looking at the same furnishings in your home? Maybe your style has changed, or maybe your decor is simply outdated or worn, and you’re looking to upgrade to something newer and more in style. Regardless of the reason, you want your home to feel like it’s a reflection of your personality, and outdated or unappealing furnishings can have the opposite effect.

It’s no secret that updating your decor can be quite pricey. Interior design is rather expensive, especially if you’re feeling ambitious and want to completely overhaul an entire room or even multiple rooms, and redecorating on a tight budget can be stressful if you aren’t looking in the right places.

Knowing where to get good deals on home furnishings is key for sticking to a limited budget, so here are some tips on where to find discounted decor that can help you fall in love with your space all over again.

Thrift shopping

Don’t be shy of charity shops or op shops, because they are often teeming with hidden gems that can be polished up as the perfect functional or statement pieces. Sometimes you can get lucky and find just what you’re looking for, and other times that ideal decor just needs a bit of DIY magic to make it your own. Buying pre-loved furniture from thrift stores is also helpful for the environment, as you’re recycling something and giving it a second chance, rather than buying something brand new.

Buy items at auction

Going to auctions and buying home furnishings from them is another great way to stretch your budget and get great pieces for considerably less than retail price. Antiques and collectibles become affordable, special decorative pieces can be found, and there is always a wide variety of furniture, decor, and other furnishings available to the highest bidder.

If you’re new to the world of auctioning, you might want to brush up on some tips on buying at auction, because there are a few tricks you need to know, like how to bid and how to collect your purchases. Some auctions even offer the option of bidding online, so you don’t need to be there in person to participate and shop.

Garage sales

As the old saying goes, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” so why not spend a Saturday morning checking out the local garage sales and seeing if anything catches your eye? You can find a great bargain at garage sales, and haggling is acceptable as well. Check the local listings in your newspaper and plan a route to maximise your time and attempt to get there before all the good items have been picked through.

Buy second-hand online

The second-hand online marketplace is full of treasures, just waiting to be found. Marketplaces like Facebook and Gumtree are great because you can search for exactly what you want within a specific location, and even set up alerts so you can get notified when your wanted items are listed, giving you an edge over anyone else trying to buy it too.

Upcycle what you have

Lastly, a top tip on how to update your home on a budget requires you to look at what you already own. You can spend a weekend restoring and upcycling furniture and other decor pieces you already own. If you’re a bit handy and like a good DIY project, this could be the way to go – and you’ll save a ton of money doing it.
