Functional printing deals with different opportunities to generate and progress in the field of electronics using various printing techniques to improve functionality to the devices and components. Functional Printing is mainly concentrating on the factors of Internet of Things and Medical equipment devices. Emerging phenomenon of Internet of Things (IoT) in the functional printing market is the key growth prospect with smart objects which consist of interconnection of Machine-to-Machine devices and the smart devices also provide the man to machine communication. Most of the companies are making several strategies to develop the area of Internet of things by testing and evaluating using big data.

IPC’s Printed Electronics initiative in collaboration with JPCA (Japan Electronics Packaging and Circuits Association) has come to develop the regulations related to the Functional printing industries. IPC (Association Connecting Electronics Industries) in collaboration with other organizations such as IEC, NPES (The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies), iNEMI are also supporting speedy development of standards and are playing an important role in the printed electronics industry future. The design guideline for printed electronics (IPC/JPCA-2291) was released in 2013 and the final draft of performance requirements for printed electronics assemblies (IPC/JPCA-6901) was released in February, 2015 for industry wide review.

All the major companies are preparing and researching currently with the Functional Printing segment which mainly is intensive on high-quality and high volume production for wide range of application in various electronic components. The applications mainly include RFID tags, OLED displays and lighting, smart labels and smart cards, printed batteries and the functional printing also mainly serves in packaging industry. One of the most important end user industry is the medical and healthcare industry, which is a huge market by including the flexible electronics in the field of packaging for pharmaceutical packaging and measuring the data.

Cymbet Corporation is the leading player in the thin-film and printed batteries market due to its offering to wide range of industries including consumer electronics, embedded systems, wireless devices and medical implants. This is followed by Solicore whose key market lies in the smart cards sector. The market for functional components such as Displays and Lighting is a developing market where companies such as Samsung, OSRAM, Panasonic, Merck and Epson, Cambridge Display Technology, Kateeva and DuPont are notable. Functional printing has urged the usage and implementation by various prominent companies such as including Eastman Kodak, BASF SE, DuPont, Avery Dennison, and GWENT, Thin Film ASA.
