How do you know if you should repair or replace your roof guttering and plumbing?

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

If your roof, guttering, and plumbing need some attention, you may be wondering if you can simply repair it or if it'll need to be replaced altogether. The answer will depend on the condition of your gutters. We've put together this guide to share some things that gutter contractors will be looking for when assessing your guttering and plumbing. They can then advise you of the best course of action given the current state of your fixtures.

Wear and tear

Gutters, when installed correctly, are a durable contraption and they do last for many years with little to no intervention along the way. However, like most things, they are susceptible to wear and tear over time. Gutters that are showing signs of wear and tear can vary in severity, obviously, the more damaged your gutters are, the more likely it will be that you'll have to replace them. Often repairing extensive damage is a temporary fix, and you are just delaying the inevitable. An example of a repair would be some rusted out screws where the guttering itself is in otherwise good condition. The screws can simply be replaced. If the guttering is rusted out and has holes in it, the entire gutter will likely need to be replaced.

Gutters that can't handle water flow

If your gutters cannot contain and redirect the amount of water that fills them in a heavy downpour, this rain will spill out and onto everything surrounding it. This is a problem for several reasons, and they include:

  1. Pool water at the foundation of your home. The can affect structural integrity over time and, cause issues such as rot and mould growth.

  2. Water can spill over and onto your roof, if it has nowhere to go, it can seep into your home and cause water damage.

  3. The excess water can flood landscaping and nearby elements.

If the reason your gutters are spilling over and onto your house is because they haven't been cleaned out in a while and debris is preventing water from flowing through the gutters as it should, this is a straightforward thing to remedy. If your gutters are too small, you may need to replace them to fix the issue.

Cheap materials were used

There are many materials that guttering can be made from, and if your home features one of the more economical options and you haven't seen to them in quite some time, there's a good chance that they may need some work. Vinyl gutters are an example of cheaper guttering, while there's nothing wrong with vinyl guttering, and they do have some advantages such as being anti-rust, they tend to be less durable. They often become brittle in the elements which is not ideal. If all of your gutters are cracking, you may have to replace them altogether. Repairing them will likely only work in the short term. Steel is super strong and resistant to the elements so, if you need to replace your gutters, we suggest investing in steel.

Aging gutters

If your gutters are old and damaged, instead of having to continually repair them, it may be easier and cheaper to replace them altogether. This is especially true if you have to pay someone to repair your gutters for you. While you can repair them yourself, working at a height comes with inherent risks.

Workmanship problems

Unfortunately, not all roofing and guttering contractors are equal, and workmanship problems are a common guttering issue. Inferior installation and low-quality products can lead to the need for gutter repairs or replacements. Whether you require repairs or a replacement will depend on the extent of the faulty guttering. Contact metal roofing sunshine coast to find out more about your roofing issue.

Water leaking onto the fascia and sides of the home

A telltale sign that water is leaking onto your fascia or the side of your house is water damage, and if there are signs of water damage, your gutters have likely been leaking for quite some time. It is hard to know whether this issue will be remedied with a repair or if a replacement is needed without looking at the source of the water leak.

Hanging or loose guttering

The fixtures that hold guttering into place can sometimes come loose and this will cause your guttering to sink or sag in areas. If this is the case, refixing them to the roof may be all they need. If it's the guttering that is damaged or broken, and that is the reason why it is in this condition, it may need to be replaced.

Repair vs replacement

Deciding whether to get repairs done or replace the guttering and plumbing altogether comes down to your budget and how damaged your gutters are. Sometimes it's worth spending a little extra for peace of mind rather than waiting for another issue to arise. Hiring a reputable guttering contractor like our team of specialists here at A.
