There are some obvious signs that your driveway may need some repair work. It is always better to treat issues with your driveway as soon as they occur so they don't have the chance to become big problems that cost a lot of money to rectify. Here are some signs that your driveway may need repairs.

Signs that your driveway needs repairs

Here are some common signs that your driveway needs repairs:

Water is collecting on your driveway

When drainage hasn't been considered, or there are issues with your drainage, a common sign is water pooling on your driveway. Pooling water is a problem because over time it permeates into the material of the driveway and causes shifting of the subgrade material. When this happens, the top layer isn't supported, and when it's driven over, the weight of the car will cause it to sink, causing potholes to form. If this problem isn't fixed promptly, it can cause further damage to your driveway.

Ravelling

Asphalt consists of bitumen and an aggregate mix and over time, the aggregate can become loose. You may notice that your driveway has loose gravel on it or it may begin to pit in areas. This gravel can make your driveway uncomfortable to walk on and rocks may fly up when it is driven on. This can damage your car and home if they strike the glass on either of them. Once ravelling has begun, it can spread and what could have been a simple repair is now a full replacement job.

Alligator cracks

You may have heard of alligator cracks before, they are when a series of cracks overlap one another. They can be a sign of issues with your subbase material, even if they are not, it will be if you don't have them repaired soon after they occur. Water can seep through the cracks into the underlying materials. It's always best to have small cracks fixed before they become too large.

Potholes

Potholes are common for asphalt or bitumen Brisbane driveways when small cracks or pooling water have been left to their own devices. Potholes can cause damage to your car, they can be a trip hazard, and if you have one, you'll likely have another if you leave it without repairing it. Water will get further and further into the subbase material and cause more potholes to form.

Fading

Driveways are exposed to often harsh conditions, including the sun's UV rays and rain, and over time this can cause fading and deterioration to occur. While asphalt and bitumen are both durable driveway materials, this is expected. You can avoid this from happening by having your driveway seal coated. This adds a protective layer to the driveway and prevents major damage from occurring. It's a good idea to have your driveway seal coated every 3-5 years to ensure it remains intact and protected.

Does your driveway need repairing?

The best way to keep your driveway in good condition is by keeping an eye out for any issues and by maintaining it regularly. A quick sweep over with a broom once a week can prevent rocks and debris from becoming embedded on the surface. It's also a good time to check for any spills or cracks. Seal coating can extend the lifespan of your driveway by protecting it from damage. Repairs are far more affordable than an entire replacement so it pays to put a little effort into looking after your driveway.
