United Language Centre Expands Academic Support to Help International Families Navigate School Transitions

SINGAPORE - Media OutReach Newswire - 17 September 2026 - United Language Centre (ULC), an international English learning community based in Singapore since 2012, has progressively extended its support into education transition, academic readiness and international school preparation, with Edu Global Connect (EGC) contributing its education expertise to this wider academic support.

Admission Is Only One Part of the Transition

For internationally mobile families, securing a place at the right school is an important milestone. But an acceptance letter is often only the beginning of a much wider transition.

Students may still need to adjust to a new academic system, unfamiliar classroom expectations, different assessment methods and, in many cases, learning and communicating through English every day.

For families, the question is therefore not only whether a child can gain admission, but whether they feel ready to learn, participate and build confidence once they arrive.

As this growing need has shaped the evolution of ULC, the expanded offering is designed to help students prepare not only for admission, but also for the academic and social transition into their new school environment.

"We often see that the real challenge lies between admission and readiness. A student may secure a school place but still need time to develop the language confidence, academic habits and understanding of a new school environment that allow them to participate fully. Our academic support brings language preparation, educational guidance, and transition planning together," said Matthew Fast, Founder & Managing Director at ULC.

Education transitions rarely happen in separate stages. School applications, academic readiness, language development and personal adjustment can all require attention at the same time.

Rather than treating these as separate needs, ULC's expanded approach reflects how international families often experience the transition in real life — as one connected journey.

From Language Learning to Education Readiness

Operating from The Adelphi in City Hall, United Language Centre (ULC) has supported adult learners, professionals, students, families, and newcomers from diverse backgrounds.

Over the years, one recurring theme has been that people rarely want to learn English in Singapore purely for the language itself. More often, they want the confidence to use it, whether that means contributing at work, speaking with a teacher, participating in class, or navigating everyday life more independently.

As these needs have become more interconnected, ULC has expanded its support beyond the traditional scope of an English language school, bringing language development together with education planning, international school preparation, study-abroad guidance and academic support.

Through its work with EGC, ULC is able to complement its existing language and community strengths with additional expertise in school admissions, academic preparation and international education pathways.

Where relevant, preparation can include entrance interview practice, school admission assessments, and readiness for tests such as WIDA, SLATE, TRACKTEST, or CAT4. An English language course can also be aligned with the student's academic and transition needs.

The expanded offering also includes International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) tutoring in Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and English, supporting students adjusting to international curricula.

The focus is on helping students adapt not only to subject content but also to expectations around critical thinking, communication, project work, collaboration, and independent learning.

Building an International Learning Community in Singapore

ULC has maintained a long-standing focus on helping newcomers, professionals, students, and families use English with greater confidence across everyday, academic, and professional settings. Beyond its role as an English language school in Singapore, ULC has grown into an international English learning community where language development is closely connected with confidence, participation, and belonging.

"English is often the bridge that allows people to participate more fully in a new environment — whether that is in school, at work or in the wider community," said Macy Liu, Executive Director at ULC. "As our learners' needs evolve, we believe our role should evolve with them."

For internationally mobile families, a successful education transition is about more than securing a school place. It is about whether a student can understand what is expected of them, communicate when they need help, participate with confidence and gradually feel that they belong.

ULC's expansion into wider academic and education support reflects this broader understanding of what international learners and families need today.

An acceptance letter can open the door. Readiness helps a student walk through it with confidence.
