A sideboard used to be a traditional feature in dining rooms. This functional and stylish piece is receiving a reboot as it is fast becoming a regular feature in modern living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. Beyond the functional purpose, it serves as an extra storage space, and sideboards can enhance your space, infusing style and personality into it. In this post, we’ll explore various sideboard ideas that can help improve your interior.

Keep it Minimal

Minimalism is one of the latest trends in modern interior design. To ensure your sideboard blends neatly in your modern home, choose a minimalist sideboard with clean lines and sleek silhouettes. The choice of materials matters as well. Mixed materials like wood and glass can help keep things simple while creating a unique look for your space. Neutral colours like black and white are also recommended to make your sideboard the focal point in your space.

Install Panelling

One of the best ways to spruce up a modern sideboard is to install a beadboard or panel behind it. This adds character to your space and helps the sideboard stand out. Install the sideboard at least six inches above the panelling for the best look. This is just one way to decorate the wall space behind your sideboard. Other options include installing wall art or adding a mirror to add some visual interest and draw attention to the sideboard.

Cover it Up

Sideboards generally store essential items like books, magazines, photos, etc. However, one of the simple hacks that can elevate the appearance of your sideboard is to cover it up. Instead of an open design, go for sideboards with covered shelves and cabinets. This will help keep your sideboard clean and organised instead of cluttered.

Decorate with a Plant

A little bit of greenery can elevate the appearance of any interior space. This applies to your sideboard as well. You can place a small vase on top of your sideboard or place an oversized houseplant in the space next to it. This creates an interesting contrast and can make the space feel vibrant.

Maximise the Top of your Sideboard

The top of your sideboard is an extra space that can be decorated in various ways to suit your style and elevate the appearance of the sideboard. A simple stack of books, a lamp, vases, art and figurines are some items you can use to decorate your sideboard top. In decorating your sideboard top, consider design concepts like the rules of three (grouping decor items in threes) and playing with heights (mixing items of various heights) to create visual interest.

Light it Up

A simple but efficient way to spruce up a sideboard is to light it up. You can do this with overhead spotlights, table lamps or even candles. This serves as secondary lighting to your space, transforming the ambience while drawing attention to your sideboard as a focal point of your living space.
