How to Reduce Your Power Bill

Being able to use electricity in our homes is vital. We use so many simple and everyday things, from switching on a light, charging a phone, watching TV, and heating up food in a microwave. It is something that we use without even thinking about it, so just imagine what life would be like without it. Of course, electricity comes at a price as we do have to pay for what we use.

If you find that you are someone who dreads getting your next power bill through the mail, then you are not alone. With rising electricity costs, many people are looking for ways to reduce how much they pay for their power bills. When wages aren’t going up in accordance with other areas of living, being able to cut your spending on power at home can be a great way to save money and make sure that your costs as a homeowner don’t spiral out of control. Here are some ways to do it.

Switch to more energy-efficient heating

One way to reduce how much you spend on your power bill is by switching to more energy-efficient heating. If you have an electric heating fan, for example, then you can switch to a split system and save quite a lot of money each year. In fact, evidence suggests that you could save nearly $700 a year by making the switch.

Wash with cold water

When it comes to laundry, you can use a large amount of water for each wash. If you have to heat all of that water to nearly boiling point, then it can take up so much power to be able to do that. The good news is that laundry companies know that, and as such, their products work when laundry is washed on cold, just as well as when washed on hot. So save yourself some power and wash with cold water.

Stop leaving devices on standby

This is something that so many of us are guilty of, but it can use up small amounts of power that can add up. If you leave a device on standby, such as a TV or a charger, you will still see a small light on the device. Power is still going to it, even if you’re not using it! A simple thing to do is to switch them off fully when not in use and you’ll be able to save power.

Eliminate unnecessary appliances

If you have a second fridge or freezer in a basement or garage, then it is important to consider if this is something that is needed anymore. They can guzzle up power, so why have two when you only need to have one? By getting rid of a second fridge or freezer, it could save you over $170 a year.

Learning to make changes that can reduce your power bill is simple, but it is something that you need to make a conscious effort with. Not only will you save yourself money on your bill, but you will be doing your bit for the environment too.
