SYDNEY (Tuesday, 13 October 2015): Current World Surf League (WSL) World Championship Tour surfer Sally Fitzgibbons is the newest addition to Surfing NSW’s illustrious Board of Directors.

The 24-year-old three-time World Title runner-up will replace former Australian Cricketer and television host Mike Whitney who sat on the Surfing NSW board for close to a decade.

Fitzgibbons represented NSW and Australia 14 times as a junior athlete in various sports, but the ocean is where Sally found most success, competing in and winning a range of Surfing NSW events right up until she qualified for the World Championship Tour in 2008.

“Surfing NSW has been a part of my career from the beginning and have provided an important set of structures and events that have ultimately prepared me for and given me a pathway to compete on the World Surfing Tour,” said Sally

“I’m honoured to accept my position on the Surfing NSW Board and look forward to contributing to the future direction of the sport.”

Realising an opportunity to share her experience in living a holistic lifestyle with her fans, in 2015 Sally put pen to paper for her first book Live Like Sally and in 2016 will launch Train Like Sally - The All Australian Beach Body App. These two projects will form the basis of her new marketing/media business Fitzgibbons International.

Surfing NSW Chairman and current CEO of the Nine Network Australia David Gyngell welcomed Sally’s appointment to the Board.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce Sally Fitzgibbons has been appointed to the Surfing NSW Board to fill the void left by Mike Whitney. From her first NSW Junior Title win, Sally has been an inspiration - not only to women’s surfing - but women’s sport in general. She is a great role model and I’m looking forward to working with her in the future.”

“A big thanks to Mike Whitney who has been a great fellow board member. Mike has been a great supporter of Surfing NSW for many years working behind the scenes to promote our sport wherever possible.”

Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon also welcomed Sally to the Surfing NSW Board.

“For over a decade, I’ve been fortunate to see Sally complete the entire Surfing NSW competitive pathway and it’s a joy to see her reach the peak of competitive surfing and now be in a position where she’s happy to give back to the sport that has given her so much. I speak on behalf of the entire Surfing NSW staff, when I say ‘Welcome to the Board Sal.’”

Sally will join the Board that consists of: David Gyngell, Managing Director of BBB Capital – Adrian Bouris, Managing Director of Komosion – John O’Neill, Founder and Chairman of Emeritus and Quiksilver Europe – Harry Hodge, Manager of iview and Internet Broadcasting at ABC TV – Sally O’Donoghue, CEO and Executive Director of Komunity Project – Paul Munten, Media Personality – Tim Bailey and NSW Premier and Surfing NSW Patron – Mike Baird.
