Jock itch is an infection caused by fungus. It is a ringworm form that likes to live in moist, warm places on your body. Jock itch is also known as tinea cruris. It has similarities to other tinea infections. Jock itch is also caused due to mold fungi that are called dermatophytes.

It usually lives on nails, hair as well as other areas of skin. Initially, this might seem harmless. However, it can overgrow very quickly and lead to infections when these are allowed to grow in a moist, warm area. It is the major reason why jock itch more commonly attacks the skin around the inner thighs, buttocks, and groin.

How Jock Itch usually occurs?

It is also linked to the athlete's foot. It is because jock itch is caused by the same fungus causing the athlete's foot.

It is common in people, especially men who sweat a lot, having a skin condition such as eczema, or the ones who are overweight.

It is also a common problem in male athletes, and that's where the condition got its name. However, you don't necessarily need to play a sport to get it.

You can get a jock itch if:

  1. You are overweight

  2. Wear tight underwear that can irritate your skin

  3. Wear a wet bathing suit for a longer time.

  4. Share sweaty clothing items or damp towels with others.

  5. You are not careful about personal hygiene.

  6. You had close contact with someone already having the condition of Jock itch.

Common symptoms of Jock Itch

Jock itch is more commonly found on the inner thighs, groin, or anus. However, some of the most common symptoms of Jock itch include:

  1. Burning and itching on the infected area

  2. Flaking, peeling, and cracking skin

  3. A scaly, red, circular rash having raised edges.

  4. Rashes that used to get worse with any physical activity

  5. Rashes that spread on your skin quickly.

Jock Itch treatment options you must know.

There are various jock itch treatment options available. Since the major causes that lead to this problem are fungal infections and moisture. So, it would help if you considered general measures to keep your skin around the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks clean and dry.

However, the common jock itch treatment may include antifungal creams that the person should use for up to four weeks consistently. These antifungals are available in the form of creams, sprays, and powders, and you can usually get them without any prescription.

Besides this, there are some preventive measures as well that you must consider avoiding encountering jock itch in the best possible way. These preventive measures include:

  • Wash your skin around the groin at least 2 to 3 times a day.

  • Make sure to keep your groin area dry.

  • Use cotton underwear to avoid excess skin irritation.

  • Use hygiene products, particularly jock hygiene, for ensured protection.

It would help if you kept in mind the fact that not every therapy is effective for all people uniformly. So, be careful. Overall, considering the above-mentioned preventive care can also help you in faster healing.
