While spending time together as a family is important, the reality is that as a parent, you still need to work and get on with the other daily tasks that need doing. When your kids are in school it’s easy, but when they are at home you might find that it’s distracting trying to keep them entertained while you’re trying to focus on other things. If you are a parent who is worried about how to keep your kids busy and happy during their time off from school, consider the following options.

Summer Camps

Summer camps don’t always have to mean sending your kids away to stay somewhere else for a few weeks, there are many versions that you can send your kids to for the day instead. Of course, if your children want to go off on an adventure and spend time with camp friends in bunks, that’s great! However, if they are anxious about being away from you for so long, or you’re anxious about being away from them, signing them up for a week or two of activities at a local club could be a good idea. There are also holiday camps that focus on specific activities, such as sports, art, music, performing arts, and science, so finding one that suits your kid’s interests should be easy.

Give Them a Project

Another option to help your kids stay entertained is by giving them a project to focus their time and energy on. It could be something that helps with their academics if you want but try to make it as fun as possible – this is their holiday after all! It could be writing a collection of short stories, arts and crafts, a science project, or even growing plants or vegetables in the garden.

Set Them a Reading Challenge

Reading is such a great way for your kids to improve their literacy skills but getting lost in a fabulous story is also an excellent way to pass the time. If you want to try and encourage your kids to spend less time on their phones, computers, video games, or watching TV, setting them a reading challenge could be a good idea. Whether it’s trying to get them to complete one book during the school holidays or more, you could help them to feel passionate about books and reading.

Family Days Out

It is important to spend time with your kids to bond as a family, and although you might not be able to take every day of their school holidays off from work, if you can manage to take one or two, or do something with them at the weekend, this would be ideal. You could all go to a theme park for the day, on a hike on some beautiful trails, go to the beach, or even spend a day at the movies. Perhaps you can hold a kids reptile party. They can come to your home and your child and their friends will be entertained and educated. Whatever it is you love to do together as a family, see if you can take some time for those activities when your kids are on their school break.

It's not always easy to keep children entertained, but if you are struggling to find things for them to do, consider the options above and see how they could help.
