4 Emerging Public Health Careers in 2022

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Public health is rudimentary to our societies, and now more than ever before, the role and need for public health professionals are being emphasized to a great degree. The demand for them has sky-rocketed ever since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, many educational institutions and schools are offering many programs and careers in the public health industry.

Public healthcare careers include a variety of roles in the healthcare industry that work on providing people with better health through education, research, and preventive training. In addition, they work on devising ways to improve the general public's health. The Public Health sector has several career opportunities due to the increased demand for the expertise of these professionals.

Public health will always be an in-demand career in the market because we will always need these services to stay healthy. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the significance of public health education and the scope of its functions.

A public health career is very flexible, and you can efficiently work within any sector based on your skill set, knowledge, and ability to adapt. Therefore, you can go for a master's in this discipline even if you have a different educational background and work within this ever-growing industry. However, many people are skeptical about going for a master's degree. At the same time, pursuing a master's in a traditional setting may seem too costly and impractical to an employed individual.

For example, many people don't want to relocate and move to an entirely new place and start looking for a new job to put food on the table, and their concern is justified. Hence, many institutions are now offering online programs, like the online master of public health, to make the masses more comfortable getting higher education. These online programs don't require relocation and spare you many more expenses, and you can easily complete your degree from the comfort of your home at your own pace.

There are many possible choices for you to choose from if you want to go for a career in the Public Health sector; some of them are listed below:

  1. Health Educator

Health educators evaluate the health needs of the people they work with and boost wellness and healthy habits among individuals. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), health educators have a projected job growth rate of 13 percent from 2019 to 2029. Health Educators work on various avenues of public health. They research and create educational programs to promote public health. Their common employers are healthcare facilities, colleges, and non-profit organizations. Their median salary is approximately $48,000.

Health Educators are often required to have a bachelor's degree in public health or health education. Different possible occupations in this career path include community health educator, school health educator, and health education director.

  1. Biostatistician:

Biostatisticians study the relationships between different biological data of living organisms. They often have expert knowledge of statistics, computer science, and mathematics. They interpret data that is collected by researchers or during medical studies. They usually also collect primary data by evaluating subjects closely. They work within a team dynamic and often have to brief their results to their team and superiors.

Biostatisticians' projected job growth rate is 33 percent from 2019 to 2029. This is due to this era of big data and the increase in demand for data analysts. The median salary for a biostatistician is approximately $93,000. Therefore, they need to have at least a master's in economics, computer science, or mathematics with a specialization in biology under their belt. However, advanced career opportunities often require a doctoral degree. Possible jobs for them include director of biostatistics, head of statistical programming, and biostatistical manager.

  1. Social and Community Service Manager:

Social and Community Service Managers are supervisors of the workers who provide health facilities to the public. They work with different stakeholders and often manage projects, programs, and even organizations that work for public health welfare. In addition, they also access the feasibility and need for certain programs. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), this profession's projected job growth rate is 17 percent from 2019 to 2029.

Service managers need to have a bachelor's degree in public health, social work, or other related fields. Positions and jobs are available for them in many organizations, whether big or small. Different jobs offered to them include Social Services Department Manager, Community Engagement Manager, and Resident Services Manager. Their median salary is approximately $69,000.

  1. Hospital Administrator:

Hospital Administrators create budgets, hire doctors, coordinate medical services, and perform other administrative functions in hospital settings. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has projected the job growth rate for hospital administrators at 32 percent from 2019 to 2029.

They are responsible for ensuring effective and efficient operation within the hospitals and greatly emphasize patient care. This leadership position often keeps the hospital steady and strong in tough times, and this position is always available in hospitals, whether big or small.

Mostly, hospital administrators need a large amount of experience in a medical setting to gain this position. Moreover, they need to have a bachelor's in healthcare administration or any related field. A master's degree sets you apart from the competition and is often preferred.

The median salary for hospital administrators is approximately $104,200, and different jobs include health services administrator, medical and health services manager, and assistant hospital administrator.

Bottom Line:

The Public Health career is very noble, and you can make a difference in the lives of entire communities. While their main focus lies on taking preventive measures, they also go as far as research and data collection to make medical processes more efficient. In addition, they use education, science, and data to find out possible areas that can be improved. Public Health offers a stable, growing, and in-demand career that is very flexible and rewarding. It is one of the most sought-after qualifications of the time and has excellent potential.
