Australia suspends raw prawn imports

  • Written by Barnaby Joyce

Australia suspends raw (green) prawn imports today from White Spot disease affected countries.

·         Decision by Director of Biosecurity to suspend imports welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Australian prawn farmers.

·         First use of suspension power since the new Biosecurity Act 2015 came into force, part of the Coalition Government’s stronger border policies, to ensure better targeted and rapid responses to biosecurity threats.

·         Suspension follows alleged non-compliance with import conditions. Criminal charges are being pursued.

Australia is cracking down on green prawn imports following suspected deliberate contravening of the nation’s strict biosecurity controls.

Criminal charges are being pursued against one importer, with another four under investigation.

“Australia’s $358 million prawn industry must be protected and not put at risk by the careless and selfish acts of a few,” Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said.

“I welcome advice by the Director of Biosecurity that he will be suspending importation of raw prawns from White-Spot affected countries.

“We will not be taking any chances. Five farms on Queensland’s Logan and Albert River area have been decontaminated, while another two are under quarantine. Welfare of Australian farmers must always be front of mind.”

The source of the outbreak is still being investigated, however one possible cause is White Spot infected raw prawns sold only for human consumption being used as bait.

“Please do not use raw imported prawns as bait,” Mr Joyce said.

“There is no risk to human health from White Spot – but it poses a serious risk to our farmers.

“This is the first use of the suspension power since the new Biosecurity Act 2015 came into force, which was part of the Coalition Government’s stronger border policies to ensure better targeted and rapid responses to biosecurity threats.”

The Australian Prawn Farmers Association has applauded the Coalition Government’s efforts.

“We applaud the effort of Barnaby Joyce in suspending these imports. It is welcome news. There were extremely loud woo-hoo’s in the room,” Australian Prawn Farmers Association executive officer Helen Jenkins said.

Mr Joyce said experts had informed him the outbreak in Queensland was eradicable and that the disease has not established in the wild. A previous outbreak of White Spot in Darwin in 2000 was successfully eradicated.

Mr Joyce offered to work with the Queensland Government, which is responsible for containing the outbreak, in a letter in December.

“Affected farmers may able for the Coalition Government’s Farm Household Allowance and Rural Financial Counselling Services,” he said.

“The Commonwealth has deployed experts to assist in the response and is also considering applications for funding to assist with the immediate response.”

Fast Facts:

·         Australia imported around 48 thousand tonnes of prawn products (including fresh frozen and processed prawns) at a value of around $620 million in 2015/16.

·         These were imported from 27 countries - the top five countries by volume were Vietnam, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

·         Of almost 12,000 consignments of raw prawns imported over the past three years (as at the 30 June 2016), all have been inspected and tested. Of these, 163 consignments failed testing and have either been destroyed or re-exported.

Using smartphones for business

  • Written by News Feature Team

Everyone uses a phone to keep in touch with family and friends. It doesn't matter whether people use a basic throwaway prepaid or the latest smart device from Apple, Samsung, Sony or Google, almost everyone has a phone.

For business people, a phone is more. It is how they make their money. They run their business enterprise on the phone. Almost everyone who works in or for a business has a smartphone. People can even run a business using a smartphone with Internet access. There are all sorts of business productivity apps that can be installed. They enable users to plan their day, keep in touch with contacts, create documents and so much more.

Developers are continually creating new apps and features for the smartphones from the major brands. Fortunately, business people and other people with a smartphone, do not have to buy a new one every few months because they can update their phone online as new operating systems and apps become available.

It is the same with the smartphone itself as the World's best case and screen protector manufacturers are bringing out new products all the time. I came across a great selection of iphone cases for my device. I had an older style very thin plastic screen protector and I found a thicker and harder version that was almost like glass online. When it arrived in the mail I installed it myself. The result is that my phone is now highly protected from impact and scratches.

Smartphone cases also add additional levels of protection. There are some that are magnetised and enable people to stick their phones to metal surfaces, others protect from coffee and water damage or even the devastating accidental drop screen shatter.

Screen protectors with privacy features should also be considered to protect and secure business information and data in your smartphone.

Business people cannot afford to lose their phone or suffer phone damage that stops access to data. They lose access to contacts and suffer down time while their phone is being repaired. Business people, more than the rest of us, should consider investing in a strong but flexible smartphone case.

The small cost of a case is a great way to protect a big communication device investment.

Phone cases and covers are more than protection devices. There are fashion covers and cases made from exotic materials that not only protect, they look good too! Business people can make a very favourable impression when they produce a modern phone with a smart looking leather cover.

Everyone who owns a smartphone should protect it. The small cost of the World's best phone covers and cases should not be an issue when you consider the value of an iPhone, Google Pixel or Galaxy. A few dollars can save a lot of money on expensive repairs or even the cost of a new phone if it is accidentally damaged beyond repair.
