The heightened scrutiny of Australia’s immigration policies in recent weeks has shone a light on the long-term problems of indefinite detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru. Michelle Grattan tells University of Canberra acting vice-chancellor Frances Shannon that in terms of a broad way forward in dealing with those detained, the government is still struggling.

“At the moment it’s an impasse but one that I think Malcolm Turnbull knows that sooner or later has to be somehow addressed,” she says.
