Medical specialists need to exchange various types of data in their work. In particular, this can be done to diagnose a problem as well as to create the most effective treatment plan. Various software development companies like Glorium Technologies build custom software products, allowing for seamless data exchange. HL7 and API can be used for data exchange in the medical industry. Learn what they are and how they differ one from another.

What Is HL7?

HL7 is a range of standards used for transferring and sharing information between healthcare specialists. In essence, it works like a bridge between applications used for medical purposes. This standard was created to allow for more efficient data exchange compared to the old methods. While there are better solutions existing today, HL7 is still used in many applications. There are two versions of this standard that exist today.

What Is API?

This term stands for an Application Programming Interface. It ensures a connection between computers or programs. The number of healthcare organizations using APIs is growing rapidly. Thanks to the use of such interfaces in the healthcare industry, patients can move to various places, and their information will be delivered to the final destination in a quick and secure manner.

The Differences between HL7 and API

APIs are considered to be more efficient than HL7 since they allow users to request data “on-demand.” HL7 provides data on a subscription basis, which means that information will be obtained whether it is needed immediately or not.

APIs also define security rules more clearly which ensures better connectivity between different platforms.

Moreover, APIs are capable of supporting SMART, FHIR, and other popular medical portals.

Bottom Line

APIs may be a better choice to ensure data exchange compared to HL7. However, the latter has undergone several improvements. Consulting an IT specialist will allow picking the best solution, depending on your needs.
