LOS ANGELES – Given the climate of police brutality in the Black community, and the rise of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the producers of the Union Buzz show on public access television will air a special, featuring a panel discussion of experts in law enforcement and the legal system. The panel will include retired Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey of the LAPD and the author of “The Creation of a Manifesto: Black & Blue,” and attorney Eric Broyles who co-wrote and self published the book “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival.” The panel discussion will be hosted by Sgt. Yulanda Williams of the SFPD and president of the San Francisco Peace Officers for Justice. A regular guest on Union Buzz, she has served on the SFPD for the past 25 years. The special programming will air on Friday, September 25 from 5 to 6 p.m. PT on Comcast channels 29 and 76. Check your local listings. The show will encourage viewers to call in with questions and comments. For more information, visit www.unionbuzz.com.

In 2009, the national spotlight hit Oakland, Calif. with the shooting death of Oscar Grant III at the hands of a BART police officer on New Year’s Day, resulting in riots and protests. Video of his death at the Fruitville BART Station was captured on cell phones by passengers, and the incident served as the basis for the critically-acclaimed film “Fruitville Station,” starring Michael B. Jordan. Since his death, there have been many high-profile killings of unarmed African Americans involving law enforcement, including Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.; Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.; Eric Garner in New York City; Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Md.; Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio; and Sandra Bland in Waller County, Texas – just to name a few.

In response to the increasing number of deaths of African Americans due to the deadly force of police, the panelists will share their insider’s knowledge as experts in law enforcement and the legal system, respectively. They will also discuss recent incidents, police practices and proactive measures to survive police encounters. Their advice on surviving police encounters promises to educate, inform and empower viewers.

ABOUT RETIRED SGT. CHERYL DORSEY | author of “The Creation of a Manifesto: Black & Blue”Dorsey knows the streets. She grew up in South Central LA when it was predominately White, and watched “White flight” transform it into a Black neighborhood, littered with gang activity, compliments of the Crips and the Bloods.During her 20-year career with the LAPD, the nation’s third largest police force, she worked a variety assignments, including vice, narcotics, patrol and the infamous gang unit CRASH (that is, Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums).

She is the author of “The Creation of a Manifesto: Black & Blue,” which is an autobiographical account of 20 years on the Los Angeles Police (LAPD) force by a young, Black, female officer whose career began in the 1980s. Dorsey gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the third largest police department in the country.

She is a community advocate and police expert, educating the public in police policy and procedures as well as understating police culture and deciphering police code talk. Dorsey steps over the blue line, and gives straight talk on topics making headline news. She’s a regular commentator on cable news, including CNN, HLN and MSNBC as well as AOL Huffington Post. She’ll also appear as an expert on the new, daytime syndicated series “Corrupt Crimes,” premiering this month.

ABOUT ERIC BROYLES | author of “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival”

Broyles is a Washington, DC-based attorney and entrepreneur. Interestingly, he’s been on both sides of the law as a juvenile delinquent and as a lawyer at a large prestigious law firm. He began his career as a corporate attorney – that is, an associate of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in the Washington, DC office.  He also served as corporate counsel for AOL, Inc. and AOL Time Warner, Inc. in the capacity of senior counsel.  Broyles worked as a judicial law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit for the Honorable Joseph W. Hatchett, the chief judge.  He’s used his legal mind to represent indigent clients on a pro bono basis, including civil rights cases.

He is passionate about sharing his wisdom and insights with youth, particularly Black males, who may believe that the odds are against them, much like he did as a teen. He is the author of “Encounters With Police: A Black Man’s Guide to Survival,” which offers advice to African-American boys and men on how to survive police encounters.

The book also provides information on the legal and administrative rights that citizens have to redress police misconduct, preventing an escalated incident. Plus, it also gives a practical step-by-step guide on how to respond to police when pulled over for traffic stops and questioning outside of traffic encounters.

Broyles has appeared on various media outlets, including Fox News, NPR’s “All Things Considered,” ION TV and featured in Newsweek magazine.  He’s been a guest speaker at many schools, youth groups, churches, universities, and trade associations across the nation.
