The Wind River Visitors Council is again sponsoring a coed-team of four Fremont County locals competing in Wyoming’s 2015 Cameco Cowboy Tough Adventure Race: a three-and-a-half day adventure race featuring rugged sections of road and mountain biking, trekking, paddling and expert-level orienteering over a course of roughly 400 miles. Day One (Thursday, July 16) begins in Buffalo, Wyoming, follows routes through the Bighorn Mountains, and completes in Casper (Sunday, July 19).

This year’s Team Wind River Country is comprised of four Lander residents (left to right): Shad Hamilton, Brad Young, Chuck Schuster and Karla Wagner. One of six Wyoming teams, Team Wind River Country (and thirty-two other teams from around the world) will endeavor through “cowboy tough” Wyoming terrain, determining routes and race plans according to time, group performance, and in addition to a naturally epic course -- various environmental hazards. Lions, tigers and bears? Nope. Mosquitos, wind and sun.

The 2015 Cameco Cowboy Tough Adventure Race is one of only two adventure races in the United States qualified in the world series of adventure racing. In good company with previous adventure courses in California and Alaska, Wyoming continues to be a favored destination for performance athletes… for obvious reasons. The Wind River Visitors Council is proud to sponsor four of Fremont County’s best endurance athletes (or craziest) to represent Wind River Country in an internationally recognized and revered event.

See a classic video and photos from 2014’s Cowboy Tough Adventure Race, which started in Fremont County. Last year’s skill sets included gold mining and whiskey shots at South Pass City State Historic Site, rappelling and caving in Sinks Canyon, tomahawk throwing in Riverton, and paddling Boysen Reservoir and Wind River Canyon, in addition to orienteering, running and biking for hundreds of miles.

Keep an eye out on your runs, rides, and climbs for Chuck Schuster, Karla Wagner, Shad Hamilton, and Brad Young and let them know you’re rooting for our hometown’s Team Wind River Country!
