Nicole Tully, Magdalena Boulet win significant 5,000-meter and 100-mile races
Richmond, Calif. (June 30, 2015) — Racing a range of distances, HOKA ONE ONE® (a division of Deckers Brands NYSE: DECK) athletes had a hugely successful weekend on the track and trail.
Nicole Tully won the 5,000-meter race at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon — earning a spot on the U.S. National Team and punching a ticket to the World Championships in Beijing in August. “I'm ecstatic about my victory and I'm proud of the way I raced,” Tully said. “I'm so excited to represent Team USA and am looking forward to my first World Championships later this summer. The best part about this victory is being able to say to my family, my coach, and my sponsors, ‘We did it.’ There's no better feeling.”
Magdalena Boulet won her 100-mile debut at the Western States Endurance Run in Auburn, California. She beat previous champions and became the first woman to ever win Western States during her first attempt at the distance. “I will never forget all the amazing people who made my first 100 mile race such an incredible experience,” Boulet said. “Western States will always remind me of the true meaning of courage, resilience and pure toughness. I'm not sure who is more beat up right now, me or my Hoka Challenger ATRs, but we'll both be back on the trails soon."
With eight HOKA athletes racing at Western States, other notable finishes include Julien Chorier (6th), Paul Terranova (10th), Emma Rocca (5th) and Nikki Kimball (10th). Kimball earned her tenth top-10 Western States finish. All eight athletes competed in the Challenger ATR, a lightweight trail shoe that excels on versatile terrain.
On the track, Leo Manzano also qualified for Team U.S.A. in the 1500 meters. Manzano edged out Ben Blankenship to take third in the race, making his seventh consecutive National Team. Ten other HOKA athletes raced at the USATF Championships, including David Torrence, Kyle Merber and Ford Palmer.
Scott Smith, a member of the HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite team in Flagstaff, Arizona will also join Tully and Manzano in Beijing as he has qualified for the U.S. National Team in the marathon. Last fall, Smith clocked a blazing 2:14.40 at the U.S. Marathon Championships in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota to secure his first spot on Team U.S.A.
“We couldn’t be more proud of all our athletes and the hours of hard work they put in to continue to excel in every distance,” says HOKA President Jim Van Dine. “Their feedback and advice in improving our products is instrumental in creating a line of versatile shoes that has become one of the best selling brands for all runners.”
