The Old Yellowstone Highway (U.S. Hwy 20/26/287) across Wyoming to the south gate of Yellowstone National Park was one of the first road trip routes designed for automobiles. It remains a unique, authentic way to road trip—Route 66-style—to Yellowstone National Park.

In the 1920s, Model-T tourists dubbed Highway 26 west the “Yellowstone Highway,” even marking its path with painted yellow rocks. It remains the most scenic route to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. You’ll even find a few yellow stones marking the route to this day!

So leave the screaming, blinded pace of the interstate behind. Exit I-80 at Ogallala, Nebraska and start your classic road trip into the history of the West and the West of today. Take U.S. Hwy. 26, slow down and take it all in: the rugged landscape, the quirky signs, the welcoming smiles, and even the giant jackalopes. After all, is it truly a road trip if you don’t discover the lesser-known, unexpected and crowd-free corners of America?

Wyoming’s Wind River Country stretch of the Old Yellowstone Highway offers that very experience. Keep that comfortable road-trip pace and stay overnight in friendly frontier towns like Dubois, Lander, and Riverton. Spend a few days in Wind River Country to take in the fresh air, a Native American powwow, or cowboy rodeo. Plan to spend a few days touring the Wind River Indian Reservation, and exploring pristine mountain scenes.

From snow-capped peaks and amazing wildlife to rich cultural experiences and warm—and sometimes quirky—communities, the Old Yellowstone Highway beckons travelers to slow down. Learn more about this route and start planning your road trip here.
