Women Who Code Launches Network In Monterrey

The 501(c)3 dedicated to helping women succeed in technology seeks to bring empowering events and programs to the traditionally male-dominated culture of the city

San Francisco, CA - December 9, 2015 -- Women Who Code (WWCode), an internationally acclaimed advocacy group that works to help women around the world excel in technology careers, has announced the opening of its newest local network in Monterrey, Mexico. The group is led by Director Pamela Rodriguez Dominguez, and their launch event took place on October 7th at the Universidad de Monterrey, one of Mexico’s top technical universities. Since then, WWCode Monterrey has held monthly events and has garnered interest from over 90 code enthusiasts.

Ms. Dominguez spoke about the importance of bringing Women Who Code to her city stating that, “Monterrey has a traditional culture which has been a source of many stereotypes that deter women from continuing or pursuing careers in male-dominated occupations such as technology. I've actually heard women say that it's probably a waste of time to study so much if we're just expected to be housewives anyway.”

She went on to note that, “I know what it's like to feel like you're the only one trying, and I know it's hard to be one of two girls in a classroom of thirty people. I want to help others stop feeling isolated, and I want to share my knowledge and experience with them. They need to know that they are not alone, that someone will help them if they continue to give that extra push, and that their personal lives should be a boost for their careers, not an impediment. I think these are things worth the extra work.”

Alaina Percival, the CEO and Board Chair of Women Who Code concurred with those sentiments saying, “WWCode has always been about empowering women by helping them see that they have the talent, intelligence, and skill to thrive in the technology industry. Pamela Rodriguez Dominguez understands the importance of that work, and that is why we are proud to have her as the Director of the Monterrey Network.”

The inauguration of WWCode Monterrey is the latest in a series of local Network launches that the non-profit has pushed out over the past few weeks, with other notable locations including Dublin, Berlin, and the Twin Cities. They currently have a presence in over 60 cities, located in 20 countries around the world. This expansion, spearheaded by Global Leadership Director Joey Rosenberg, has led to rapid growth for the organization with a recent announcement placing their membership at over 50,000.
