Kitting Out Your Kitchen: Appliances Worth Spending On

  • Written by: Daily Bulletin

Cooking is one of the ways busy adults still get to exercise some creativity in their daily lives, and what they are able to cook is greatly expanded by a well-equipped kitchen. It is no fun discovering a delicious-looking recipe in a book or online only to find out you don’t have the appliances needed to make it.

But kitchen appliances can be expensive, and the range of options can be overwhelming. This can cause a sort of decision paralysis, where people get hung up on the questions of what they really need to buy, what they should spend on and where they can save money.

This is a quick guide to why spending a bit more can be a good long-term decision and three essential appliances which are worth paying up for.

Are high-end kitchen appliances better?

When there are cheaper options that can perform the same basic function, a common question people ask themselves is whether high-end options make such a big difference as to be worth spending the extra money. The main things you need to consider in order to make a decision are:

  • Performance: You probably think basic appliances will still get the job done, but often we take a very narrow view of what the job in question actually is. For example, if you think the task of a fridge is only to keep food cold, then it seems like a fridge on any budget can do this. But more expensive ones usually come with better air filtering systems that keep food fresher for even longer. Another example is ovens. Narrowly, all ovens are able to heat up our food. But a high-end one can heat itself up more quickly, saving you time, or they might offer more precise temperature controls which result in the food retaining more of its taste and moisture.
  • Design: Performance is not the only factor which separates the expensive options from the cheap ones. High-end options often simply look nicer and blend into your kitchen better.
  • Durability: High-quality materials and considerable care go into making high-end appliances, which means they tend to last a lot longer, even with frequent use. And they don’t just last, they’re designed to keep working as well as they did when they were new throughout their lifespan. In the event that the performance does deteriorate, they typically include a warranty.

What kitchen appliances are worth investing in?

The versatile, must-have appliances that are worth spending a bit of money on are:

  1. Stand mixers: A stand mixer from a reputable brand such as Kitchenaid is essential for baking and other recipes which involve mixing or mashing tough and sticky ingredients. Opting for a quality, high-performance mixer is sure to save you a lot of time and energy.
  2. Toaster oven - These are smaller and therefore more energy efficient than large ovens, but at the lower end they can be quite limited. Spend more for one with a wide range of different settings which you can use for more recipes.
  3. Immersion blender -  Again, opt for quality to better blend tough ingredients. High-end blenders also offer variable speeds. These can be essential to avoid splashing mess all around your kitchen.
