Shelving is one of the most basic and useful features a home or business can have. Everybody has stuff, and sometimes you have lots of stuff, so where are you going to keep it? On the shelf, of course, unless you want to have your stuff strewn all over the floor! Shelving is so handy it can even be used as a verb, "We can just shelve it for now!"

While usually considered only for their primary function, keeping things on them, shelving can also be put to work in some other, more imaginative ways! So forget about the books and the knick-knacks for now, and let's consider what else we can do with shelving!

Plant Wall - These living walls of greenery have become very popular in Australian homes and offices recently because they are a great, space-conscious way to bring a little life into an otherwise sterile space. There's not really anything magic about these plant walls, just pull aside the ivy leaves and you will find that it's really just a shelf crowded with potted plants! Just make sure that sun-loving plants like Zamioculcas zamiifolia get plenty of natural light! Or, grow tomatoes for a sustainable tasty treat that will save you on grocery bills!

Collectable Museum - If you are a collector of small, pretty or interesting things then you are going to want to show them off where everyone can marvel at them! The easiest way to do this is to dedicate shelf space to display your prized collection out where you can enjoy gazing at it, but up high out of harm's way! Glass shelving is particularly good for this, as it allows light to pass through it to lower shelves. You can also back the display with mirrors in order to enjoy the objects of your obsession both front and back!

Home Nerve Centre - This shelf is solely for the purpose of keeping all your mission-critical items in one place so you always know where to find them when you are in a rush! This is where you always put your car keys so you will never have to mount a search and rescue operation in your house again! School bags, purses, briefcases, lunch boxes, all of these can be placed here ready to go! How about that dog leash, or those sunglasses you always misplace? What about phones and chargers, or a torch if you need to shine a light on something? Fret no more, they are all on the shelf, always!

Book Shelf - Do you remember those rectangular paper things people used to read before mobile devices took over our lives? They are called "books" and you may still have some lying around your home. The traditional place to put them was on a bookshelf dedicated to them so that you could easily pull one down and read it! Give one a try, but be warned, scrolling on the page is just going to smudge the ink!

Be sure to check the Australian Government's Your Home webpage for more tips on making your home the best it can be. Now let's see what interesting things you can put on a shelf, the ceiling is the limit!
