Tips for Packing Fragile Items When Moving House

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Moving house can be both exciting and stressful. Exciting because you get to start a new chapter in your life, and stressful because there’s so much to do. Packing up your belongings can be particularly stressful, especially when it comes to fragile items. Fragile items such as glassware, antiques, and electronics can easily break during transit, causing damage and financial loss. To help ensure your fragile items arrive safely at your new home, here are some tips for packing them.

1. Use Proper Packing Materials

One of the most important things you can do to protect your fragile items during a move is to use the right packing materials. You’ll need plenty of bubble wrap, packing paper, and sturdy boxes. You can buy these from your removalist or from a local moving supply store. If you're unsure about packing for your move, leave it to the experts at a moving company in London, Ontario, who can handle the packing process efficiently and ensure your belongings are secure for transport.

2. Pack Fragile Items Separately

When packing your fragile items, it’s essential to keep them separate from other items in the same box. Pack them in their own box, and label the box as “fragile” so that the removalist knows to handle it with care.

3. Wrap Fragile Items Individually

Each fragile item should be wrapped individually with bubble wrap or packing paper. This will help protect it from any impact during transit. If you’re packing glasses or other stemware, wrap them around the stem to provide extra support.

4. Fill Any Empty Space

When packing fragile items, it’s essential to make sure there is no empty space in the box. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to fill any gaps, and ensure that the items are packed tightly. The purpose of filling empty space is to prevent the items from shifting around and hitting each other during the move. This will minimize the risk of damage and ensure that your fragile items arrive safely at your new home.

5. Label Boxes as Fragile

Labeling your fragile items will help your removalist identify which boxes need to be handled with care, and they will take extra precautions to ensure that your fragile items remain intact. Using a bright-colored marker will make the label stand out and help the removalist easily identify which boxes are fragile, reducing the risk of them being mishandled.

6. Don’t Overpack Boxes

When packing fragile items, it’s crucial not to overpack the boxes. Overpacking can cause damage during transit. Make sure you leave enough space in the box so that the items can move around slightly without hitting each other.

7. Use Specialty Boxes

If you have particularly fragile items, such as mirrors or artwork, consider using specialty boxes. These boxes are designed specifically to protect delicate items during transit. Specialty boxes often come with additional features such as extra padding, corner protectors, and reinforced sides to provide additional protection for your fragile items. While they may be more expensive than regular boxes, the investment is worth it to ensure the safe transportation of your valuable and delicate belongings.

Packing fragile items for a move requires careful attention and planning. By using proper packing materials, packing items separately, wrapping each item individually, filling any empty space, labeling boxes as fragile, not overpacking boxes, and using specialty boxes when necessary, you can ensure your fragile items arrive safely at your new home.
