It's an unfortunate truth that nature sometimes plays some dirty tricks on us, especially as we age. One of the most disheartening negative events we face is unwelcome changes to our appearance, such as the forming of wrinkles and loose skin. We look in the mirror and bemoan the fact that it isn't reflecting the healthy person we want to see there anymore, and it can be very hard to take. Among the most alarming of these changes is the formation of a double chin, scientifically known as submental fat. This is an all too common cosmetic problem affecting many people, in this case, regardless of age or body type, it can happen to anyone, although most commonly in seniors. The condition occurs when a superfluous layer of fat forms beneath the chin, making it appear as if it were a second, or double chin.

In this case, we are fortunate that there is something to be done to alleviate this displeasing condition, you can become the recipient of a double chin removal, a fast, non-invasive procedure that can have you looking the way you want to fast!

To understand this common problem better, the following are some of the conditions that tend to cause a double chin to happen:

Genetics - Our genetics play an important part in deciding where fat is distributed throughout our bodies. If you are someone who has a genetic predisposition to send body fat to the chin region, your chances of developing a double chin become substantially higher, even if you are at a healthy body weight.

Weight Gain & Obesity - This is the most common cause of a double chin, the excess weight causes fat to accumulate in various parts of the body such as the chin area. This excess fat accumulates around the throat causing the skin beneath the chin to plump up and sag, resulting in the development of a double chin.

Poor Posture - It may come as some surprise, but having poor posture is a common contributor to the formation of a double chin. If you maintain a posture with your head thrust forward, or if you tend to slouch (mother told you not to!) it causes weakening of the muscles around the neck and chin which allows the skin to sag, and also causes a less well-defined jawline to form.

Skin Elasticity & Ageing - Our skin loses its natural firmness and elasticity as we age, resulting in decreased collagen and elastin can cause the skin to become loose around the chin and neck, which makes the double chin more obvious.

Making a concerted effort can help to prevent double chins from happening. Eating a balanced diet and making sure to get regular exercise is the key to maintaining a healthy weight. Being overweight can cause excess fat to accumulate beneath your chin, leading to a double chin and its unflattering sagging. Concentrating on good posture reduces neck strain and strengthens neck muscles which helps to prevent a double chin from forming

If you are suffering from a double chin there is help available, contact your cosmetic medicine practitioner for more information.
