Imagine if the hard-earned skills and knowledge you've gained through years of real-life experience could be turned into recognised credentials. And obtaining professional certification wouldn't mean starting all over again. Instead, it would acknowledge and value the insights you've gained from your life experiences.

That's what the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system is about. However, certain conditions must be met for this recognition to be granted.

Let’s take a look.

What is RPL Certification?

RPL Certification allows you to use your previous skills, knowledge, or experience to meet Australian qualification requirements, making the journey towards qualification faster, cheaper, and easier.

The aim is to equate your life experiences to the learning outcomes of a particular course or qualification, so you can bypass certain subjects and fast-track your journey towards obtaining real Australian qualifications.

Think of it as a bridge that connects informal learning with formal qualifications. And it isn't limited to any industry – you could work in construction, IT, health, management, or something else. It's an excellent way for people to switch careers, progress in their current role, or gain formal recognition for their acquired skills.

Who can grant RPL Certification?

Obtaining an RPL certification is not automatic. It requires a thorough RPL assessment and applicants must provide various forms of evidence to prove their competency.

Only Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), such as Skills Recognition International, can legally grant RPL in Australia.

The RPL assessment and approval process conducted by reputable RTOs ensures that your RPL is legally recognised.

RPL vs. Advanced Standing: the difference

While both RPL and Advanced Standing facilitate recognition of prior learning, they serve different levels of education.

Advanced Standing (or Academic Credits or Credited Subjects) is the university-level equivalent of RPL. Unlike RPL which is granted by RTOs and often relates to past experiences, Advanced Standing typically pertains to past study.

Converting your experience into RPL qualifications might pave the way for you to apply for Advanced Standing. However, discussing this with a tertiary institution is essential as rules may vary.

Conditions for granting qualifications through RPL

Granting qualifications involves thoroughly assessing evidence that supports an individual's prior learning. This evidence can range from certifications, licences, and professional memberships to portfolios, photographs, and diary entries. Third-party references from former colleagues or employers can also help substantiate your claim.

Regardless of whether your experience was gained in Australia or overseas, it can be evaluated for RPL.

In summary, RPL is a great pathway for anyone who wants to leverage their previous experience to gain Australian qualifications. Companies like Skills Recognition International can guide you through this process. While the duration can vary depending on the evidence required, it could be completed in just a few weeks with the right assistance.
