Vivid Sydney presents after-dark music and arts feast at National Art School

  • Written by: Vivid Sydney

National Art School’s grand historic Cell Block Theatre will transform into an immersive sound-and-light-scape after dark, when Vivid Sydney descends on the Darlinghurst institution for the first time ever this 615 August.

Presenting a brand new, eclectic music and arts program running over the first two weekends of the winter festival, revellers can indulge in a smorgasbord of mind-bending, atmospheric and interactive music performances ranging from diabolical disco and ethereal neoclassical to frenetic funk and Baroque/contemporary fusion.

3HARPS | Vivid Sydney 6, 7 & 8 August
Shows: 7PM, 8PM, 9PM
Multi-instrumental composer and performer Jake Meadows of 3HARPS will drive the majestic sounds of the concert harp, electric harp and custom-built midi harp with ethereal electronic music, triggered by a curated light show, over three nights – his first solo show after performing alongside Daniel Johns in Vivid LIVE 2015.

The Song Company | Vivid Sydney12 August
An exquisite ensemble fusing Baroque singing with the haunting choreography from Karul Projects’ Thomas E.S. Kelly, in a semi-staged, evocative rendering of two musical masterpieces. Baroque period marvel Membra Jesu Nostri by Dieterich Buxtehude will be intertwined with major new work I pray the sea, by Australian composer and rising star Chris Williams.

Throw away any expectations you may have about the old and the new – this project promises to be one of the most exciting and original fusion of chamber music and dance from Thomas E.S. Kelly and incredible vocal artists of The Song Company.

The More Please Orchestra FT. Costa | Vivid Sydney13 August
The Greek God of gardening Costa Georgiardis joins 16-piece The More Please Orchestra; a fabled, underground, magic-realist, anti-supergroup purveying frenetic funk, diabolical disco and free-range rock mayhem, for a merciless, mesmerising mirth and Dionysian dance floor catharsis.

Taking the stage in this delightfully quirky, meta-cabaret group are musicians from bands such as Karma County, Max Q, The Jackie Orszaczky Band, Jungle Boogie, The Aerial Maps, Whirleywirld, The Java Quartet and many more.

Coastal Elite Allstars | Vivid Sydney14 August
Personal Best Records presents Sydney band Coastal Elite and their nautically-inclined cohort of guest musicians and singers including Moody Beach, Carl Fox (ex-Porsches), Michael Di Francesco (Touch Sensitive), Harry Sutherland (Australian Athlete), Vincent Sebastian (Oyobi), Juanita Tippins (Suite Az, Cold Chisel) with many more big names to be announced.

Imagine you’re taking a languorous mid-summer cruise on Sydney Harbour. The heat, the breeze, the salt and the unsteady ocean groove. There’s a sense of freedom looking out at the distant horizon. For a minute, an hour, an afternoon, all the stresses of modern life recede. Coastal Elite explore disco-fied excursions into Yacht Rock, West Coast-style smooth boogie, and Blue-Eyed Soul influenced by the likes of Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald and George Benson.

Morph it with the disco-boogie-funk of Kashif and Evelyn Champagne King and shimmy onto a seductively breezin’ dance floor.

The Art Music Café | Vivid Sydney15 August
Hosted by ABC Radio’s James Valentine, The Art Music Café is an esoteric smorgasbord sampling of new art and music from some of Sydney’s most respected art musicians, accompanied by installations of contemporary painting, millinery and poetry readings. Discover new sounds, premiere works and performances under the guise of the avant-garde, the beautiful and the disturbing.

Performances include: Hubris! - A mixed media score and projection following a story of misplaced optimism, ego and a tragic aftermath; Perspective - an opera inspired by the gulf in opinions in the modern world; Ίσθμια - a soundscape of sonified earthquakes, tides and nuclear activity; Never Done Disco - an improvised performance of minimal bass, harmonica and percussion and many more.
