How To Properly Care For An Oilskin Coat

  • Written by: News Co

Investing in high quality attire is one of the best things you can do – rather than spend a little bit of money on poor quality clothing every year that will inevitably end up in landfill before the year is out, spending a little bit more and buying something that will last for years can ensure you get not just better quality, but better bang for buck. The problem here is that these articles of clothing require a good amount of care to ensure they last for a long time, particularly oilskin coats. In this article, we take a look at a few essential tips to ensure your new coat lasts a lifetime!

Tips to get you started

If you’re looking to pick up a few Drizabone women’s coats to last you for a few decades, learning how to properly care for them is crucial to ensuring that they don’t fall apart within the year. After all, with a little bit of careful routine cleaning, they can very last over a lifetime while providing the same consistently excellent protection. To help your oilskin garment continue to look great, one of the most important things to remember is that you should always allow the jacket to dry naturally after use. In the event that you do need to wash it, it is recommended that you hand wash or soak an oilskin jacket only with cold water – putting it into a washing machine is a great way for you to very quickly ruin a perfectly good oilskin coat. If you find that there are light marks on your jacket, simply dab at the stains with a damp sponge and cold water, but if it’s mud you’re trying to get rid of, it’s best that you wait until it’s dry. When dry, mud can easily be wiped away with a brush and you won’t have to deal with unsightly streaks. In the case of dust build-ups, your coat can benefit from a good hose down every now and again (but make sure to not do this too regularly).

Does your oilskin coat need to be re-oiled?

The oil and wax coating of an oilskin coat slowly evaporates over time, so any indication that the coat is leaking should be a sign that you need to re-oil it. You will need to ensure you very thoroughly clean your coat before you re-oil it, which will involve you adding the coat to soak in a soapy tub of cold water overnight and then dried afterwards. Once clean, preferably look to oiling your coat on a hot day – this greatly improves the results due to the oil’s long-term exposure to heat. You should then aim to gently heat the garment dressing until it turns into liquid form, after which you should apply the dressing to the coat with a clean cloth while exercising restraint (going too crazy here will result in an inconsistent finish). The sun will help to spread the dressing over the coat, but if you need to re-oil the coat in more unfavourable climate, you can replicate this by using a hairdryer instead.

Ready to make a great investment?

Buying high quality clothes can mean some investment is required on your part, but this is absolutely something that has a big payoff – a coat that is well-tended to will last for decades and look after you as well as you look after it!
