How to Set Up a Grassroots Football Club

  • Written by: News Co

For many people, football is such a strong passion that it is almost a way of life and not merely a sport. Therefore, the natural continuation of this passion is to set up a football club of your own. However, you need to be aware that this is not an easy endeavour. Before you get started, it can seem like an extremely daunting prospect. The following article aims to simplify it as much as possible.

Determine Your Reasons

Before you get started, you need to ensure that you are setting up the club for the right reasons. Perhaps you want to set up a club for kids who would not otherwise get the chance to play. Maybe you simply want to have fun with your friends. Whatever the case, this driving passion is where you will draw your reserves of strength as setting up a football club comes with numerous challenges along the way that need to be overcome.

Find a Pitch to Play On

Inevitably, you are going to need a pitch to play on. So, you need to start looking around your local area for possibilities. Alternatively, you could look for a football turf and set up your own. Ultimately, you need to select a location that is going to be convenient enough for everyone to access. Bear in mind that this is going to represent a significant amount of your expenses, and you need to compare and contrast the different prices available to you as much as possible.

Apply for Licenses

When you set up a team, you will need to get it properly accredited to ensure that you can enter league and cup competitions. This means filling in a lot of paperwork and having a board of directors who are accountable. You will need to apply for things such as insurance and enforce a code of contact. Without these licenses, you will not be operating in accordance with the rules and your team could suffer as a result of this.

Recruit Sufficient Players

Now comes the stage that you need to start recruiting players. Beyond your starting 11, you are going to need some substitutes who can come in and cover when needed. After all, there are bound to be occasions when your first team are simply unavailable. You also need to make sure that you have players covering all of the different positions. After all, not everybody can play up front – you need a goalkeeper as well!

Pick a Coach and Club Officials

Beyond the players themselves, you also need everybody else who is going to be involved in the running of your club. A coach is highly important, though you may be doing the job yourself. You are also going to need a board that includes a chairman, treasurer, club secretary etc. Everyone needs to know their particular area of responsibility and should manage it properly.

Though there is plenty more that we could mention, these are the basics of setting up a grassroots football club.
