Many plumbers provide gas fitting services. This is because they are qualified to provide gas line services. On the other hand, there are gas plumbers who are qualified only as gasfitters and cannot provide plumbing services. Thus, there is a difference between a gas plumber and the Penrith Plumber. They are not the same. This guide explains the differences between the two so that you will hire the right professionals for your job.

What is a Qualified Plumber?

Plumbing work involves the operation or job in relation to the installation, demolition, removal, alteration, replacement, repair, or maintenance of the system of pipes and fixtures that allow clean water into a building and liquid waste out of it. A plumber is required to complete a 4-year apprenticeship to become a licensed professional.

The plumber will also learn about the basics of gas fitting. This will allow the plumber to apply for both the plumbing license and an interim gas license. They will be able to perform gas work under the supervision of a qualified gas fitter. The plumber can also obtain a full gas license by completing a 12-month program and a Certificate IV program in plumbing.

What is a Qualified Gasfitter?

Gasfitting work involves the operation or work related to the installation, demolition, repair, maintenance, removal, or replacement of a gas installation. A gasfitter must complete a Certificate III course in Gasfitting before being able to work under the supervision of a full gas fitter.

The Certificate III program in Gasfitting doesn't cover plumbing work. It is often completed by tradespersons or non-tradespersons in the mechanical, electrical, and other related fields who have to work on ‘Type A’ gas appliances and gas supplies.

A full gas license can be obtained from the Department of Mines and Energy after having worked for at last 12 months with an interim gas license. The person will then have to complete the matching Certificate IV program.

How is a Plumber Different from a Gas Plumber?

When choosing a plumbing service that provides gas-fitting services, it is important to ensure they have the proper qualifications for your job. Keep in mind the following points:

  • A licensed and qualified plumber can provide most gas fitting Sydney services including installation, removal, repair, services, and maintenance of all gas pipes and fixtures.

  • A professional that is only qualified as a gas-fitter will be unable to handle any plumbing work. They are licensed only to work in general gas systems. This can include installation and general maintenance of gas heaters, cooktops, wall ovens, gas BBQs, and cooktops. They also have the skills to convert barbeques to natural gas.

Thus, plumbing and gas plumbing are different occupations. They require different types of qualifications and training. While plumbing licenses are issued by the state’s Building Construction Commission, the gasfitting licenses are issued by the Department of Mines and Energy. When you have a plumbing or gas plumbing job in your home or place of business, make sure to contact the right type of professional based on these insights.
