Important things you should check on your car regularly

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

Owning a car comes with an extra layer of responsibility that's mostly neglected by many car owners. Well, maximizing your car's life span and performance will demand you put on a new hat of responsibility.

You don't necessarily have to be a mechanical expert to properly care for your car and keep it running well. You just need a little extra effort and discipline.

Here is a list of things you should frequently inspect on your car depending on the time and season. While some vehicle parts must be checked regularly, others may take a long-term approach. Ensure you always stick with your car's maintenance schedule and service interval record.

Oil levels

Running your car without proper oiling is synonymous with a breakdown or engine damage. When the engine is cool, take some time to inspect the oil level of your car.

Simply pull out the dipstick and see the level your engine's oil is currently at. It should stand between the minimum and maximum levels for optimal running. Additionally, observe the color of the oil. If it is black, you need an urgent oil change.

Coolant levels

To avoid both extremes of an overheated or frozen engine, train yourself to frequently check your coolant levels. Perform this check when the engine is cool to avoid the risk of burns.

Should you need to top it up, refer to your car's handbook for the appropriate coolant and mix.

Air filter

Most innovative mechanics the likes of Sutherland Automotive will tell you that a clogged or faulty air filter will always translate into reduced engine power and fuel efficiency. Without seamless airflow within the engine, particulate and debris will build up and gradually reduce the engine's lifespan.

Refer to your car's handbook on the frequency of these checks and how to perform them.

Tire treads

If you mostly operate or drive in moist conditions, frequently inspecting your tire treads is a must. For proper and sustainable traction on slippery roads, your tire treads must always be in top condition. Inspect the tires for any symptoms of wear and tear as well as strange lumps.

Tyre pressure

When undertaking a long trip or intending to carry some extra cargo, inspecting your tyre pressure is imperative. That includes the spare tyre too.

To effectively do this, you need a tyre pressure gauge. With this tool, you will never have to deal with a flat tyre or get stranded on the side of the road.

The recommended tyre pressure for your car may change based on outside pressure thereby important to check with your tyre manufacturer for the appropriate pressure.

All your lights

The most overlooked of them all. Adequate visibility adds to a safe driving experience and that's what your headlights, turn signals, parking, and brake lights do.

Park your car on a flat surface, turn on both your headlights, and thoroughly inspect them. Ensure they are properly positioned and working fine. Ask someone to stand behind the car while you engage the brakes and ensure the lights are properly functioning.
