A $5 million program to encourage high quality graduate engineers to work in Australia’s automotive sector has opened today.Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews launched the Automotive Engineering Graduate Program, aimed at providing a steady flow of qualified, job-ready engineers into the Australian automotive sector.

“As an engineer myself, I am very pleased to announce the opening of a program that seeks out some of our best and brightest graduate engineers to pursue research projects with automotive businesses,” Minister Andrews said.

“Under the program, graduate students will put forward research proposals and the best of these will receive funding.

“Australia has a thriving automotive components sector and is competitive in global vehicle design. We need more of the highly skilled engineers involved in these areas and across the broader automotive industry, including trucks and buses, in order to compete internationally in the rapidly changing space of vehicle design.

“Engineers, designers and technicians have a key role to play in the transformation of Australian automotive manufacturing to higher value-added products and services.”

The program is part of the Coalition Government’s plan to keep Australia competitive and create more jobs. It will increase the level of advanced engineering skills in the sector and is part of the $100 million Advanced Manufacturing Fund, announced in the 2017-2018 Budget.

Program applications close on 6 December 2018, and applications can be made here: www.business.gov.au/AEGP.
