Glenwood Springs’ resident Bob Boyle is an expert on Doc Holliday. He ought to be; he’s been slipping into the persona of the iconic Western character for nearly 20 years. Bob portrays the gun slinging dentist at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in the summers and at Frontier Historical Society’s annual Ghost Walk for three weekends in October. Here, Bob answers a few questions about the gambling gunfighter.

How many people did Doc actually kill? This is the number one question I get. He had one for sure kill, one very likely and nine or ten wounded, depending on whether you think Doc shot one into Frank McLaury at the OK Corral. Much of it is still under heavy debate after all these years! Why are people so fascinated with John Henry “Doc” Holliday? Doc embodied the values of the West. He was a loyal friend, brave and willing to put his life on the line for his friends.  Although, according to Virgil Earp, he didn’t have that many friends. The Ghost Walk is considered one of the best events of its kind in the state of Colorado, why do you think that is?We set the scene; first we lead people up a trail at night by lantern light. It builds the anticipation. At the cemetery, we keep it spooky but not scary. The highlight is hearing from the “ghosts” in the graves. Doc is just one in a cast of Western characters. Aside from Doc Holliday, who are your favorite Glenwood Springs historical characters? In the current Ghost Walk cast I’d say Jasper Ward played by Bill Kight and Kid Curry played by Mike Miller. This year’s Ghost Walk dates are Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.
