LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 21, 2015) – Portable Kitchen, maker of the classic PK Charcoal Grill and Smoker, has joined forces with leading active lifestyle agency Backbone Media to manage its public relations.

The first Portable Kitchen (PK) cast aluminum grill and smoker was designed, manufactured and sold in Tyler, Texas, in 1952. Over the next 30 years, PK Grills were sold across the South and in U.S. military commissaries around the world. Though production stopped in the 1970s, the legendary durability of PK Grills ensured that thousands of them still exist today.

In 1998, a Little Rock grill enthusiast and local businessman discovered a 1950s model Portable Kitchen Charcoal Grill and Smoker at a yard sale. His interest sparked, he purchased the Portable Kitchen name and began producing sparkling new aluminum PK grills from castings of the original product. After a 20-year hiatus, PK was back in business in Little Rock, Arkansas. Over 60 years since its inception, the grills today are nearly identical to the originals, handcrafted in the USA.

In 2014, the company rebranded and embarked on a broad-scale marketing effort to attract a new generation of customers. “In order to execute our growth plan over the next few years, we need a partner that can help us build national brand awareness across multiple markets,” states Scott Moody, partner and creative director for Portable Kitchen. “Backbone’s network across active lifestyle, outdoor, business, and food and beverage media is a perfect fit as we introduce this incredible heritage brand to a new generation.”

A world-class grill and smoker, the unique PK stands out from the field. Aluminum conducts and retains heat more efficiently than other common grill materials, providing a smooth distribution of heat for even cooking without the need to constantly turn or reposition the food on the grill. The PK four-way venting system provides easy and accurate temperature control for every style of cooking without flare-ups from dripping fat. The quarter-inch-thick, rustproof casting of the PK allows it to perform as much like an oven as an outdoor grill.

“Backbone is fortunate to work with best-in-class brands and Portable Kitchen is no exception,” states PR Director Ian Anderson. “We love partnering with brands that have a rich story, killer products, and people who have a passion for what they do. I can say from first-hand experience, once you’ve tried a PK Grill, everything else pales in comparison.”
