Lander, WY - Strap on your trail shoes and get ready for a beautiful morning in Sinks Canyon State Park. The 3rd annual “Run Like A Bighorn” 5K trail run is coming up.
The run will be held Saturday, July 18th at 7 a.m., with registration beginning at 6 a.m. at the Sawmill Campground. Runners and walkers may also pre-register at the Visitor Center. The registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for kids under age thirteen. This fee includes an official race T-shirt and water bottle.
The money raised by the run goes to support the park's visitor center. “We have a terrific interpretive center in the park,” said Superintendent Darrel Trembly. “Past races have helped us raise money to get “Bam Bam the Ram," the bighorn sheep that lived in the park, on permanent display. We hope to add new displays from money raised this year.”
Over the past two summers the popular “Run Like a Bighorn” trail run brought out large groups of runners of all ages who relished the chance to take on the diverse terrain the scenic canyon offers. Runners have to chug up steep hillsides, scramble over and around boulders, negotiate tight switchbacks, go up to the steep cliffs towering over the canyon, then back down again for a footrace to the finish line. One reason this race in Sinks Canyon is so different from the other runs in the area is this canyon race is a true trail run in a state park and extremely challenging. The organizers say that people are welcome to walk or hike the route as well.
The park is asking the community’s help in the run. “We're looking for local businesses and organizations to help sponsor the race,” said Trembly. “Every dollar we raise goes directly to the park and will make every visitor’s experience better.” Trembly said sponsors will all be on the official race T-shirt and will be able to display banners, merchandise or other materials at the park on the day of the race, Saturday, July 18th. “Sponsors may choose to simply give funds, or sponsor individual items such as water bottles and racer’s numbers,” Trembly said.
The park is also asking for volunteers to help with the race. “We need folks to help mark the trail, sign racers in, be timers on race days, and perform lots of other fun jobs,” Trembly said. To help with the race or be a sponsor, contact the park at 307-332-6333. For more information go online at www.sinkscanyonstatepark.org.
