Concordia University Wisconsin’s School of Pharmacy contributed to the safe disposal of 620 pounds of miscellaneous pharmaceutical drugs this past weekend.

On Saturday, April 30, Concordia was designated as a drop off site for any expired or unwanted prescription medications. The Concordia Student Pharmacists Association teamed up with Ozaukee County, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department and the Mequon Police Department to offer one of multiple drop off sites in the area.

The event was part of a larger effort called National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Twenty-six boxes, or 620 pounds, were collected from both the Concordia site and Ozaukee’s municipal medication drop boxes.

The medications will now be properly disposed of, according to a Facebook post from the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

“That’s 620 pounds of pharmaceuticals that will not end up in our drinking water or in the hands of someone else, either intentionally or by accident!” the post states.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day has collected more than 5.5 million pounds of drugs since its inception in 2010, according to the DEA.
