“ABLUTION” WORLD PREMIERE AT 2015 DANCES WITH FILMS

LOS ANGELES (May 22, 2015) – Chinese Film Editor EVITA YUEPU ZHOU has established herself as a skillful talent in Hollywood’s indie film scene, cutting culturally diverse projects spanning a wide range of genres.
Zhou’s skills will be on full display at the iconic ‘Chinese Theater’ in Hollywood when the dramatic short, ABLUTION, makes its world premiere as an ‘Official Selection’ at the 2015 Dances with Films festival screening on May 30, 2015. The film explores the inner life of a conservative Muslim woman and her struggle to reconcile her sexuality and spirituality in 1980s Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War.

To assist in telling this brave story, director Parisa Barani wanted a film editor with a unique perspective and skill set. Barani finally found that in Zhou, explaining “I was absolutely astonished by Evita’s vision for the film. After talking to her about the film, it was very apparent to me that she would be the right fit due her passion, appreciation of diversity, and her extensive editing background.”

When she made the decision to move to America, Zhou wasn’t sure if her diversity and talent would translate to the American film industry. Zhou admits, “I’m a Chinese female editor in a traditionally male dominated field. I’ll be honest…it can be rocky sometimes. But, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects and with directors that view my cultural diversity as an advantage. This is what inspires me to work harder and use my skills to continue supporting filmmakers in telling their stories.”

Up next, Zhou begins editing the documentary feature film WHEN THE MUSIC PLAYS from director Christine Yoo (Wedding Palace). The film follows six Israeli and Palestinian young people who must work together to achieve their goal of inviting a K-pop (Korean pop music) singer to perform in Israel. Yoo shares, “I felt Evita would be the best editor for this project, not just because of her outstanding technical skills and artistic sensibilities, but she also has a specialized knowledge and understanding of this music genre.”

Zhou has more than 5 years’ experience in editing and post-production to her credit, beginning in China and then expanding into the United States. Her work has screened at numerous festivals around the world, including Cannes short corner, New York International Film Festival, Dances with Films, Imagen Awards and the Broad Humor Film Festival. Her talents have straddled a multitude of genres and mediums comprised of narrative and documentary features, creative commercials, trailers, short films and reality television shows. She holds an M.A. in TV and Film Studies from Cal State Los Angeles and two Bachelor’s degrees in Broadcasting Director and Environmental Engineering from Shanghai Theater Academy.
