Find Your Calling at Wyoming’s Sled Dog Race

LANDER, WY—You just might find your calling at the Lander leg of the Eukanuba Stage Stop Sled Dog Race—you wouldn’t be the first.

Racer Jerry Bath, of Lander, helped out at the Lander stop of the race years ago, piquing his interest in the sport. This February 1 and 2, he’ll race through Lander for the eighth year.

The Eukanuba Stage Stop Race will kick off in Jackson on Jan. 29 and hit Wind River Country (Fremont County) Feb. 1. The race stops in a different town each night, spanning eight stage stops, four states, and nearly 350 miles.

While teams are stopped over in Lander Monday night, Feb. 1, the public is invited to meet Jerry, his four-legged teammates, and other racers including local Junior Mushers Hannah Bonham and Michael Putnam. From 4:30–6:30 p.m., the 200 block of Main Street will be closed to traffic so the public can check out the dog trucks and gear, chat with mushers and meet the canines. Bring cameras, but please leave your pets at home.

That evening, the Lander Bake Shop will host a screening of the 2015 IPSSSDR (International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race) Movie, as well as serve hot cocoa and cookies. The 15-minute movie will play on a loop all evening.

Rise early the next morning, Feb. 2, to watch the teams in action on race day. The Lander leg of the stage-stop race will start at Louis Lake Parking Lot on Highway 28 south of Lander. The parking lot is small, so consider carpooling. The race starts at 9 a.m., and the teams will cover 50 miles, returning approximately five hours later. Cheer them in, after which they will take care of their dogs and hit the road to get to the next leg.

If you find yourself inspired to try the sport, you can give it a try right here in Wind River Country.
