This guide looks at the main types of power poles used in Australia, how they differ and when specialist electrical work may be needed.

What are The Main Types Of Power Poles in Australia?

Across Australia, poles come in several materials and designs, and the right choice depends on factors such as location, exposure, network requirements and whether the pole is part of the public electricity network or privately owned.

For homeowners, builders and property managers, knowing the difference can make maintenance and electrical work much easier to plan. These are the primary types of poles used across buildings all over Australia:

Timber Power Poles

Timber remains familiar in suburban streets, regional areas and rural properties. It is relatively straightforward to transport and install, which has helped make it a longstanding choice for overhead electricity infrastructure.

Treated timber can provide many years of service, but the pole still needs attention. Moisture, termites, decay, bushfire exposure and physical damage can all affect its condition. The section closest to ground level deserves particular attention because deterioration in this area can be difficult to spot from a distance.

If a timber pole on private property looks damaged, leaning or unusually soft around its base, it should be assessed rather than assumed to be safe.

Concrete Power Poles

Concrete is a popular choice where a pole needs to withstand conditions that can be hard on timber. Termites cannot eat it, and it will not rot in the same way a timber pole can. Its resistance to fire is another reason concrete can make sense in certain locations.

There is a trade-off, though. Concrete poles are heavy. Getting one onto a property and putting it into position can require considerably more equipment than a timber replacement. That can affect the cost and logistics of a replacement, particularly on a difficult-access site.

Steel Power Poles

Steel gives you a strong structure without the bulk of a concrete pole, which can be useful on sites where available space is limited. You will see steel poles in a range of settings, including around roads, commercial premises and industrial properties.

The steel itself is not the only thing to consider. Most poles rely on a protective coating to keep moisture away from the metal. If that coating is scratched, cut or otherwise damaged, the exposed area can begin to corrode.

This deserves extra attention on coastal properties. Salt in the surrounding environment can make corrosion more aggressive, so a pole that looks sound should still be checked from time to time.

Composite or Fibreglass Power Poles

Composite or fibreglass poles are a newer option used in some parts of Australia, particularly where weight, corrosion resistance or difficult access matters. They are lighter than concrete and steel, which can make transport and installation easier in remote or awkward locations.

They are also resistant to termites, rot and corrosion, which can make them useful in coastal, bushfire-prone or high-moisture environments. However, the trade-off is that they can have a higher upfront cost, so they may be used selectively. 

Stobie poles

Stobie poles are one of the more recognisable features of South Australia's electricity network. They were developed in 1924 by James Cyril Stobie and use steel components separated by concrete. The design was developed partly in response to South Australia's shortage of suitable timber for electricity poles.

The combination gives Stobie poles strong resistance to termites and contributes to their durability. Government information identifies them as a standard part of South Australia's distribution infrastructure, alongside other forms of electrical support structures.

Their use is particularly significant in South Australia. The state's electricity distribution network included more than 647,000 Stobie poles in 2023, according to the Technical Regulator's annual report.

What is The Difference Between Distribution, Transmission and Private Poles?

A pole can also be classified according to what it does rather than what it is made from.

  • Transmission structures carry electricity at high voltages over long distances, sometimes across hundreds of kilometres.
  • Distribution poles support the local network that supplies electricity to communities, homes and businesses.
  • Service poles and lines form part of the connection between the distribution network and a customer's property.
  • Private poles can be located within a property's boundaries and may be the responsibility of the property owner.

Ownership and maintenance responsibilities are not identical across Australia. They can depend on the electricity distributor, the location of the pole and the particular connection arrangement.
