CBD For Skin: Benefits, Risks & Ways To Use CBD Oil

  • Written by: NewsCo

Nowadays, CBD oil is dispersed throughout the wellness industry, from oil tinctures and vape pens to dog treats. With its natural effectiveness and wide array of beneficial properties, this buzzy ingredient intended to help with many common ailments, starting from pain and chronic aches to sleep problems and high levels of anxiety. But aside from taking CBD oil for sleep and anxiety, the oil is also popping up as the main ingredient in many beauty and skincare products. Such products are becoming more and more popular each day, and now entire lines and brands are dedicated to the useful effects CBD oil has when applied topically. Here we discuss CBD benefits for skincare, its risk and ways of using it.

What Is CBD & How Does It Work?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active, chemical compound and one of the two primary cannabinoids of cannabis plants (e.g., marijuana and hemp). Unlike infamous THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, meaning it doesn't cause a 'high' or euphoria.

CBD is thought to act upon the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). This complex system is made up of neurotransmitters and cell receptors that are present throughout the entire body, but mainly in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and immune system. ECS controls numerous vital functions, such as pain, immune response, memory, stress, appetite, and so on. When the system is pushed away from its balance points, cannabinoids are naturally produced in the body to restore normalcy.

The beneficial effects of the cannabinoids can be mimicked using CBD infused products. Research shows that cannabidiol may be effective in relieving chronic inflammation and pain, anxiety and insomnia. Additionally, CBD appears to offer several benefits even when used topically. This is why CBD oil has become such a popular addition to various cosmetics, beauty and skincare products.

What Are The Beauty Benefits Of CBD?

Acne control/treatment

Acne is a common skin condition that has never had a definitive cure, something that will combat both the issue of acne's physical appearance and its painful nature.

A 2014 study showed that CBD could be effective for acne treatment as it normalises the acne-causing agent. What's more, by inhibiting the growth of sebocytes, it addresses acne, mainly by preventing cell proliferation. The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are also very beneficial in fighting acne. Applying CBD topically can help to decrease breakouts and relieve redness or inflammation in acne-ridden areas, as well as treat acne scars

Dryness & itching prevention

A 2019 study found that CBD might be beneficial for treating several symptoms of common skin conditions, such as dryness and itching. Its anti-inflammatory properties can be especially helpful in alleviating the potential triggers of conditions like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. As cannabidiol can help soothe skin and reduce irritation, it can be a great solution for people with sensitive skin.

Infection

A 2016 review notes the antibacterial and antifungal qualities of the cannabis plant. Since CBD is a cannabis derivative, it can be useful for treating various skin infections, which can also aid in preventing acne caused by skin infections.

Anti-ageing effects

In addition to being effective in treating skin problems like infections, acne and underlying inflammation, CBD might also work well in restoring youthful glow and lost elasticity of the skin. Oxidative stress causes cells to break down, and the body ages earlier than necessary. To prevent oxidative effects, we need antioxidant-rich compounds.

Due to its powerful antioxidant properties, CBD can counteract harmful free radicals and reduce the look of inflammation, thus helping in preventing the appearance of skin ageing like ruddy skin tone, skin dullness and wrinkles.

Is CBD Safe?

Just like all active ingredients, there are some possible side effects you should be aware of. A 2017 study suggests that CBD has a "favourable safety profile", yet the possible side effects of CBD include drowsiness, nausea and diarrhoea.

Furthermore, if you are taking other medications or supplements while taking CBD products, note that it has been shown to interact with drug metabolism and inhibit metabolising enzymes such as grapefruit. CBD can interfere with the breakdown of drugs so that too much of them remains in your body.

How To Use CBD For Skin?

With any CBD infused product, it is crucial to follow the manufactures' guidelines, which is usually found on the product's label, to determine the recommended dosage, how often you should use the product and how to apply it.

Users can apply CBD oil and different skin care products containing CBD oil directly to their skin. Or you can find a variety of products intended for oral consumption, such as CBD capsules, tinctures, edibles and CBD vape products like e-liquids, disposable/reusable vape pens and cartridges.

The suitable dosage will vary depending on the type of CBD product, the concentration of the CBD oil, method of intake and many others factors. It is highly advised to start with the lowest dosage possible and gradually increase the daily CBD dose once you know how your body responds to cannabidiol.

Different Types Of CBD Extract

Aside from the difference in CBD oil strengths and product's forms, you have probably noticed that CBD products usually come in three main types: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. And each type of extract is manufactured differently.

Full-spectrum CBD (also referred to as whole-plant extract) is packed with all of the plant's compounds, including minor cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and small concentrations of THC.

Broad-spectrum CBD products don't contain any THC but still bring a complex blend of beneficial components found in hemp. Such products are commonly used by professional athletes and people that are subjected to random drug testing in their workplace.

CBD isolate is considered the pure form of CBD oil that contains no other components or THC compound.

Even though broad-spectrum CBD usually excludes THC, it can still produce the entourage effect, which suggests that various cannabis compounds work in synergy to enhance each other's health benefits and potency. Therefore, broad-spectrum CBD products and full-spectrum CBD products are considered to be more effective than CBD isolate due to their potential therapeutic effects. At the same time, CBD isolate is typically odourless, tasteless and completely THC-free, making it a great option for first-time users.
