Best Self-Storage Options

  • Written by: a contributor

With high density living on the rise, demand for storage units is increasing. Secure storage is essential for storing irreplaceable or valuable belongings. One of the main reasons to use a storage unit is to prevent the elements (water, humidity and dust) from getting to your possessions and potentially damaging them.

However, not all storage options are equal. There are several types of storage and some will be more suitable for your requirements than others. For example, climate-controlled storage units are a step up from a standard style self-storage unit and these are recommended when you have items that need to be stored a bit more carefully, such as wine or delicate papers.

If you want to store some items, think carefully about what you do – and don’t – need. Here are some storage options to consider.

Outdoor Vs. Indoor Storage

Outdoor storage is a great option for vehicles and heavy machinery – largely because there don’t tend to be any sizing restrictions. Also, equipment such as RVs, cars, boats, tractors and trucks are water-tight and resistant to the elements.

Larger vehicles, such as trucks, can be extremely difficult to store in cities or other built-up areas, so outdoor storage facilities are becoming increasingly popular.

Outdoor storage rental tends to be much cheaper per square metre than indoor storage.

A good outdoor storage facility will have secure fencing, gates 24-hour surveillance cameras to keep your equipment safe. Some facilities may even be patrolled by security.

Indoor storage, on the other hand, is perfect for storing items which need to be protected from rain, dust and vermin. Indoor storage options include individual units located within a large, shared storage building, or individual sea containers.

There are various storage unit and shipping container rental options. The units, or containers, are generally available in a range of size to suit your requirements and budget. For example, you can choose from an 8-foot, 10-foot, 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container. Some operators will even offer super-sized containers, or modified containers for specific requirements.

Most storage operators will offer both short-term and long-term rental options. If you enter into a long-term hire agreement, you will often get a better rate than you would for a short-term agreement.

Mobile Storage

Mobile self-storage is an extremely convenient option to consider. As the name suggests, ‘mobile storage’ refers to portable – or mobile – storage containers which are delivered to your site or home.

This type of storage allows you to easily load the items you want to store straight into the storage container. It saves you a huge amount of time, as it eliminates the need for multiple loads and unloads with transportation. You simply load your belongings and the operator will transport the container to their storage facility, or to your chosen destination. You can also opt to store the container on your property, however there may be local council requirements you need to adhere to

Mobile storage unit rental can be costly, however, transport costs are generally included in the quote. Also, the time it saves is a huge factor to consider when weighing up your options.

Mobile storage is a great solution if you’re renovating or waiting to move.

A good operator will supply containers which are water-tight, dust-proof and vermin-proof.

Climate-Controlled Units

A climate-controlled unit will help to protect your belongings from severe temperature changes. Temperature changes could lead to moisture issues, which can cause mould and mildew.

Artwork, documents, books and clothing can be ruined by mould or mildew, while furniture can be damaged by warping, due to the expansion and contraction of the wood from humidity.

Humidity can also cause metals to rust, resulting in damage to tools and electrical equipment.

So, if you're looking to store certain items, it's important to consider the climate and humidity, particularly when storing for a long period of time.

Climate-controlled units are a safe, reliable solution for storing valuable items such as antiques, fine art, family heirlooms or wine.

However, they are more expensive than standard units, so be sure to factor that into your budget.

Modified Storage Units

Modified storage units are a great solution for any unique requirements you may have.

For example, you may want heating, or need a refrigerated unit for storing perishables. Or perhaps you need power and lighting?

You may require shelving if you’re looking to store files and other documentation. Alternatively, if you want to store a particularly large or awkward item, you may require special access, such as side doors, or a roller door.

As modified units are customised, most requirements can be met. However, as a general rule, the more complex the modification, the most it will cost.
