How to Help Your Child to Get Ready for the NAPLAN Test

  • Written by: NewsServices.com

NAPLAN is coming up soon, and your child needs to be prepared. You have purchased all the necessary items and got access to a NAPLAN past paper, revision guide, and highlighters. However, your child is still struggling to focus and revise effectively.

As a parent, you may be feeling frustrated and helpless. But do not worry, there are a few things you can do to support your child in the lead-up to the test.

Here are some tips on how to help your child get ready for NAPLAN:

Encourage a Positive Attitude for Learning

One of the main reasons why kids struggle with NAPLAN tests is because they have a negative attitude towards them. They see exams as a chore and something to be dreaded. This can lead to anxiety and poor performance on the day of the test.

It is important that you encourage your child to maintain a positive attitude towards learning. Help them to see that exams are just another opportunity to show what they know.

Talk to Them About Their Fears and Anxieties

If your child is feeling stressed about the upcoming test, it is important to talk to them about it. Let them know that it is okay to feel nervous and that you are there to support them. Encourage them to express their fears and allow them to vent their frustrations.

Try to Help Them to See the Test in a Different Light

One way to help your child overcome their anxiety is to try to change their perception of the test. Instead of seeing it as something that they have to endure,  help them see it as an opportunity to show off their skills.

Encourage Them to Take Breaks and Relax

When your child is studying for the NAPLAN test, it is important that they take regular breaks. Studying for long periods of time can lead to burnout and this can have a negative impact on their performance.

Make sure that your child takes some time out to relax and do something they enjoy. This will help them to stay refreshed and focused when they return to their studies.

Help Them to Create a Revision Schedule

If your child is having trouble staying on track with their revision, you may need to help them create a revision schedule. This should be designed to fit around their other commitments, such as school and extracurricular activities.

It is important that the schedule is realistic and achievable. Otherwise, your child will become discouraged and may give up on their revision altogether.

Encourage Them to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

It is important that your child gets a good night’s sleep in the lead-up to the test. A tired child will struggle to concentrate and perform to the best of their abilities.

Make sure that your child goes to bed at a reasonable time and that they avoid watching television or using electronic devices in the hours leading up to sleep.

We hope that these tips have been helpful. Remember, the most important thing is to encourage your child and let them know that you are there to support them. NAPLAN can be a daunting experience but with the right attitude and preparation, your child can do it!
