Keeping your car in good shape can be pretty difficult, especially if you’re an inexperienced driver. The first reason is that cars are pretty complex mechanisms with way too many things that can go wrong. Learning the ropes of all of them takes a lot of time, money, and patience.

The other reason is that some car repair shops are more than willing to rob you of your money and inflate the prices of even the minor repairs you can perform in your garage.

Well, there is very little we can do about the first problem – it’s something every driver needs to go through. But, let us then take a look at some of the smart ways to save money on repairs and avoid rip-offs.

Read the manual and do your own diagnostics

These two things will help you remove a lot of uncertainties off the table. The owner's manual contains a lot of helpful information about the recommended maintenance schedule and the baseline condition you should keep the vehicle at. Diagnostics will, on the other hand, help you see if there's anything wrong and how far you have gone from these baseline specs. Most of the newer vehicles use the benefit of OBD-II technology to quickly detect eventual problems. All you need to do is to plug the OBD scanner in the data link (usually under the dashboard), and that's it.

Start doing regular maintenance

Driving long stretches of road takes quite a bite out of your vehicle. This is especially true if you, for instance, live in Australia, and visiting a family may take you on a trip across the entire continent. In cases like these, leaving the small issues like low fluid levels, low tire pressure, and similar things you can quickly address in your own garage can blow up into serious problems and hazards. Of course, all these issues are more expensive to fix the longer you leave them unchecked. So, take some time to learn about basic car maintenance and cut the problems in their root.

Perform repairs at specialised shops

You will usually get better service at a lower price. This is usually due to the fact that specialised shops buy the replacement parts in bulk at a discounted price. You are also getting better-trained labor, so the repair times are kept at a minimum. If we once again take the Land Down Under as an example, we can see that windscreens are very popular repairs due to damage they take on the long inland roads. Because of that, professional windscreen replacement in Sydney and other big cities where residents have an option to choose is usually performed in specialised repair shops. Similarly, if you are looking for air conditioning repair, go to a specialist car cooling system expert.

Do your best to avoid duplicate labor cost

This one will require that you spend some time learning about the basic car mechanics, but it more than pays off long term. In some cases, the car mechanic will need to remove a lot of car components to come to the one that's causing the biggest problem. This is an excellent opportunity to replace the faulty components that are going to be pulled out to make room for repairs. For example, fixing the squealing drive belts allow you to replace upper and lower radiator hoses at a much lower price than tackling all these components one by one.

Know the usual repair charges in your area

This is something all drivers learn as time goes by. One way to do that is to drive the vehicle to a repair shop and rely on the blind luck that the mechanic won't try to exploit your lack of experience to squeeze out a couple of additional bucks. The other, much more prudent approach to the problem is to simply check the usual charges in your area and stay away from the shops with inflated prices. Asking your friends and family for referrals may give you access to some affordable and professional shops that don't necessarily have the best online presence.

We hope these few tips will help you ease the learning curve all drivers need to face and avoid being robbed by unprofessional car mechanics when the time comes to take your four-wheeler for repair. Car repair shops that try to exploit inexperienced drivers usually earn bad rap in the long run. But there is no good reason to help other people learn from your mistakes.
