In most cases, a surgeon will replace the head of the femur and acetabulum with artificial hip parts after removing poor bone tissue and cartilage. However, if the damage to the hip joint is not as severe, patients might qualify for minimally invasive surgery that requires less recovery time (though these types of candidates are typically 50 years or younger, according to the NIH).
