American Sentinel University’s DNP and MSN Programs Receive National Grant to Help Nurse Educators

– Grant Helps Nurse Educators Committed to Educating the Next Generation of Nurses –

AURORA, Colo. – August 5, 2015 – American Sentinel University’s graduate and postgraduate nursing programs were awarded a $522,402 grant that will make doctoral and master’s nursing education more affordable for currently practicing or teaching nurses who are committed to educating the next generation of nurses.

 The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) grant was awarded June 2015 by the U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and marks the first time American Sentinel has received this grant for its DNP Educational Leadership and MSN Nursing Education programs.

“There is nothing more important in healthcare today than preparing tomorrow’s nurse educators and providing them with the skills and knowledge to create and deliver new models of teaching and learning needed in the nursing workforce,” says Mary Adams, president and chief academic officer at American Sentinel University. “This grant will help ease the financial obstacles that many students experience in earning their graduate and doctoral degrees and help strengthen the field of nursing for many years to come.”

The NFLP grant provides loans to graduate and doctoral nursing students with the intent to serve as faculty at a school of nursing to address the nursing educator shortage. It allows the university to offer loans for tuition, books, and fees at a low interest rate with partial loan forgiveness to borrowers who complete their program of study and then serve as a full-time nursing faculty for a consecutive four-year period.

Students who receive the NFLP loan may have up to 85 percent of their loan forgiven in return for serving full-time as faculty at an accredited school of nursing in the U.S.

To qualify for the program, students must be accepted or enrolled in either the DNP Educational Leadership or MSN Nursing Education programs.

Once a student is accepted into the program, they must maintain good academic standing to continue to receive NFLP loan funds until graduation. The service requirements for loan forgiveness begin during the first twelve months after completion of the degree.
