BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Champlain College will begin offering a new Masters of Science in Emergent Media (MSEM) this fall to prepare students for careers producing and managing the collaborative process of the next generation of media content such as mobile apps, video integration, transmedia, augmented reality and games.

The 30-credit, one-year residency program will explore state-of-the-art online collaborative design methods while working on teams at the College's Burlington campus that include students enrolled into Champlain's Master of Fine Arts in Emergent Media program.

According to MSEM Program Director John Banks, "These experiences will allow students to form relationships, seek solutions, and create innovative media, all while acquiring a new perspective on their individual strengths within dynamic, collaborative production settings."

"We currently define emergent media as the creative possibilities provided by the mix of the internet, low cost computing, mobility, and new means to collaborate. Just as the novel emerged from the printing press, new formats for communication and expression are emerging from technological innovations," Banks added.

The MSEM, according to Ann DeMarle, associate dean of Emergent Media at Champlain, is designed for recent college graduates who are looking for a deep collaborative experience and the theoretical application of how innovation emerges. Champlain College undergraduate students may enroll in a new 4+1 option, allowing them to network, participate in media fields, gain access to the MakerLab and work on projects in the Emergent Media Center while completing two degrees in four and a half years.

"It's also perfect for Industry professionals," DeMarle noted, "who are looking to deepen their knowledge, update their skills, or change into creative careers."

Students in the MSEM program at Champlain will:

  • Immerse themselves in the latest technological advances through a collaborative production environment. Champlain's EMC provides a working studio where undergraduate and graduate students work together on mission-based digital media innovations for real clients.
  • Use the MakerLab to bring ideas to life. The Champlain College MakerLab is a prototyping facility equipped with state-of-the-art 3D printers, 3D scanner, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, Arduinos and traditional tools allowing students to explore possibilities for invention and entrepreneurship.
  • Learn from leaders in the world of emergent media. Champlain's MS in Emergent Media faculty are industry experts in the world of electronic games, transmedia storytelling, interactive design, video and special effects, mobile computing, and design thinking. The program focuses on building relationships, and faculty members are accessible, genuine and committed to success. Their academic and professional credentials, along with the small class sizes, promote lively interactions.

The MSEM program will begin this fall, with two 14-week semesters plus one nine-week summer session. The MSEM program is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. Applications are accepted year-round and financial aid is available to qualified students.
