Recloose Rocks The Flat: Dance all night Saturday, Aug. 22

The Flat, a popular venue in the Montrose neighborhood, welcomes Recloose to the stage on Saturday, Aug. 22. The show starts at 9 p.m. at the bar located at 1701 Commonwealth. There is no cover. 

Recloose – whose off-stage name is Mathew Chicoine – has returned to the U.S. this year after spending a number of years living in New Zealand. He started his career in the spring of 1997 in his hometown, Detroit. He made contact with techno pioneer Carl Craig, which led to the signing of Recloose to the Planet E label – as well as the birth of an eclectic and vibrant musical career.

Recloose spent eight years studying music and playing jazz saxophone, before shifting his focus to the art of collecting and mixing vinyl. His eclectic DJ sets, which were first heard on Ann Arbor’s WCBN, have led him to become an in-demand DJ, playing at clubs and festivals around the world as well as performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble.

During his over 15-year career, Recloose has developed into a true standout. To date he has released a number of groundbreaking tracks for Planet E and Rush Hour, a host of remixes for the likes of Funkadelic, Herbert, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Towa Tei, Dennis Coffey, MJ Cole and Azymuth - - as well as a live album and three full-length LPs.

Recloose relocated to New Zealand in 2001. He hosts the “Hit It and Quit It” radio show, broadcasting with Frank Booker every Monday from Auckland’s George FM. He also took up residence at Auckland’s Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand to set up and deliver a full-time DJ and Electronic Music Production program, now rotating between teaching and securing his masters degree at the University of Auckland.

About the Flat

Located at 1701 Commonwealth, in Houston's Montrose neighborhood arts enclave, the Flat serves up cocktails with a focus on high-end rums. There is also a wide selection of wines and local beer on tap. The lounge is known as a great venue for music and a space to show off moves on the dance floor. The food menu features wings and unique, gourmet pizzas. The bar is open seven days a week - from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Sundays. Happy hour is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and all day on Monday. Sunday offers reverse happy hour from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
