Founder of West Michigan’s fastest growing appliance retailer retires from 40 years of dedication to quality and customer service.

Monday July 6th, 2015, Grand Haven, Michigan - Last month the founder of Bekins, a Grand Haven-based independent appliance and electronics retailer, retired. Harvey Bekins founded Bekins Appliance Repair in October of 1975 with 24 years’ experience in appliance repair. Now, as Bekins celebrates its 40th year in business, Harvey Bekins is retiring at the age of 81.

Initially providing in-house repair service on all major appliances, Bekins Appliance Repair became known in the community for quality repairs and superb customer service. As Grand Haven’s appliance expert, Harvey Bekins’ face was a familiar and welcome sight to many Grand Haven residents. After eight successful years, Harvey Bekins and his son Scott Bekins established a retail store at 735 Washington Avenue in downtown Grand Haven, which remains the store’s headquarters.

Years of continued commitment to Harvey Bekins’ core values of customer service and quality led Bekins to expand its customer base, product line, and team. In 2012, Bekins opened a Grand Rapids location, and in 2015 the company opened a Service and Distribution Center in Coopersville to meet growing demand. Harvey Bekins has been a member of Bekins’ appliance repair team since his son Scott Bekins purchased the company in 1999.

Harvey and his wife Barbara Bekins are longtime Grand Haven residents. In his retirement, Harvey Bekins looks forward to farming and spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bekins will be celebrating Harvey’s retirement with a Retirement Open House Monday, July 20th from 10AM to 6PM. There will be breakfast treats in the morning, and a barbecue will be provided by Wolf/Sub-Zero throughout the afternoon. There will be cake and a drawing for a Wolf countertop convection oven giveaway at 5PM. To enter the drawing, participants must refer to the ad running in the Grand Haven Tribune July 16th, 17th and 18th (also available here on Bekins’ blog). A special Maytag sale will accompany store-wide sales, in honor of the first brand sold at Bekins.
